Network management vs. network monitoring
Network management - Get a handle on your network
Network management is a crucial task for all system administrators, who are responsible for the development, expansion, and continuous operation of an IT infrastructure.
Network monitoring – Keep a constant eye on your network
With network monitoring, you monitor all the key aspects of your network, including availability, bandwidth, and databases. You need to be informed quickly so you can take action at once. The network software PRTG makes this possible.
Sensors to help you get started with network management
iWhat is a sensor?
In PRTG, “Sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, e.g. the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, the free space of a disk drive. On average you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
PRTG comes with numerous SNMP sensors for devices such as routers, switches, and servers. These sensors are specially designed to work with all the major manufacturers, including Cisco, HP, and Dell. More on SNMP monitoring
Packet Sniffer sensor
The PRTG Packet Sniffer sensor monitors your traffic in detail, according to IP addresses, protocols, data types, and more. Learn how to filter and analyze your traffic here.
Do you use Microsoft servers and workstations? If so, then you can monitor your devices via WMI. PRTG comes with a number of sensors for such monitoring, including the WMI Security Center sensor. You can also use the PerfCounter Custom sensor.
PRTG is compatible with all NetFlow versions, IPFIX, and all the major Flow protocols. The NetFlow protocol is primarily used by Cisco devices. Learn more about our NetFlow monitoring here.
Network management software: The advantages of PRTG
Work with peace of mind
PRTG saves you an incredible amount of stress. It comes with a built-in notification system that is only activated in the event of a problem. As a result, you can sit back and relax, knowing everything in the network is OK. With PRTG, you no longer have to worry about a thing. It lets you go about your daily work with total peace of mind - and even enjoy stress-free evenings and weekends.
In the event that your network malfunctions or crashes, PRTG will sound the alarm so you can spring into action at once. Most of the time, you’ll know immediately which server, router, or switch is behind the problem. Thanks to the prompt PRTG notification system, you can intervene before other users notice that something has gone wrong.
A smart investment
PRTG provides you with a detailed look at your network capacity. It lets you run long-term analyses and plan in advance. PRTG comes with a handy reports function which creates quick and easy-to-understand diagrams that are perfect for explaining network loads and issues to higher-ups or other coworkers who lack your technical know-how.
Network management: Understanding the FCAPS model
The ISO (International Organization for Standardization) developed a model called “FCAPS’ to create a definition for network management. “FCAPS” stands for Fault Management, Configuration Management, Accounting Management, Performance Management, and Security Management. Here’s a breakdown of each part:
Every network returns errors. Fault management involves identifying, analyzing, and removing these errors. It lets you keep your network in tip-top shape.
Accounting management provides you with helpful statistics on how your network is being utilized. You can subsequently use this information to create invoices.
Define threshold values, and monitor and analyze the performance data of your network. Performance management lets you spot and react to trends.
With security management, you identify the full range of risks - and secure your network accordingly.
Practical tip: “Hey Gerald, what would you tell an administrator who is looking to monitor his network with PRTG?”
“PRTG lets you create your own custom maps and dashboards. With these features, you can immediately visualize the status of your network. Each map has its own URL which can be shared. Click here to see how it works, and here for some examples of custom dashboards.”

Case studies: Reliable PRTG network management
solutions for a variety of different fields
The software industry
“PRTG is our early warning system. It makes life a whole lot easier by promptly sending out an alert in the event of an error, thereby allowing us to avoid much bigger issues down the line,” affirms Gary Evans, IT Director at Smooth Fusion. Smooth Fusion creates and manages websites and web applications for companies. To the case study
The engineering field
“With PRTG maps, it’s extremely easy to make a diagnosis upon receiving an alert – even for those who are not that familiar with the structure of the network,” states Juha Marjanen, IT Manager at the Finnish company Comatec, which provides services to the engineering field, among others. To the case study
The banking sector
“PRTG is like a second pair of eyes that never goes offline. It helps us to organize our time and resources around those work areas which most require our attention,” declares Brad Mennen, System Administrator at Hume Bank, an Australian bank whose many branches include a number of locations in New South Wales. To the case study
Network management tools vs. network monitoring software
Network management tools
Tools for network management allow you to actively access your network. They are used for operations performed directly inside the network, such as a backup or an update.
Network monitoring software
Network monitoring software such as PRTG, on the other hand, is used to passively monitor your network. This software sends you a message in the event of an error, subsequently allowing you to actively go to work inside the network. Examples of network monitoring tools include open-source solutions such as Nagios and proprietary software like PRTG.
PRTG and NetBrain:
A winning combination
Paessler, the network monitoring specialist, and NetBrain, the market leader in automated network management, have teamed up as technology partners for Paessler’s Uptime Alliance Program. Analysis data collected by PRTG is saved by NetBrain in a dynamic network map.
When PRTG discovers a problem (and sounds the alarm), NetBrain automatically creates a custom map via an “API call” for the affected and adjacent systems. A predefined diagnosis (“runbook”) can also be activated, with the result being saved in the corresponding map so it can also be accessed at a later time.

QoS monitoring with PRTG
Is your line choppy? Do your video calls keep getting dropped? If so, then you have a problem with your quality of service. PRTG lets you set up easy and effective QoS monitoring and monitor values such as latency and jitter. PRTG also comes with IP SLA sensors for SNMP devices.
iSNMP stands for Simple Network Monitoring Protocol. Its usefulness in network administration comes from the fact that it allows information to be collected about network-connected devices in a standardized way across a large variety of hardware and software types. SNMP is a protocol for management information transfer in networks, for use in LANs especially, depending on the chosen version.
LAN, WAN, and WLAN monitoring with PRTG
Your LAN should always be stable – even if you have a large or distributed network. PRTG is centralized monitoring software for your entire LAN. What’s more, PRTG comes with special remote probes for monitoring your WAN. It also lets you keep a constant eye on your WLAN.
