How Fortinet and PRTG work together
NetFlow is a protocol for collecting, aggregating and recording traffic flow data in a network. NetFlow data provide a more granular view of how bandwidth and network traffic are being used than other monitoring solutions, such as SNMP. NetFlow was developed by Cisco and is embedded in Cisco’s IOS software on the company’s routers and switches and has been supported on almost all Cisco devices since the 11.1 train of Cisco IOS Software.
Fortinet is a leader in infrastructure security solutions. PRTG by Paessler is a network monitoring tool. You can integrate Fortinet’s great security solutions into PRTG Network Monitor. See the benefits of the synergy between Fortinet and PRTG and the added value you’ll receive.
The Fortinet solutions offer a wide spectrum of security coverage. The Fortigate firewall, the flagship product of this corporation, is the hardware that should receive the highest attention when monitoring. Different security functions can be activated by software configuration, making this device a key component in the security role of the network.
Fortinet’s product catalogue is wide. They offer solutions for the security of:
- Data Center
- Wireless or wire access
One of Fortinet’s greatest advantages is that the devices support the most common protocols: SNMP, SNMP Traps, Syslog and NetFlow. All of them offer valuable and complementary information. To make the greatest use of the provided security services it is important to have an automated solution that ensures that everything is working perfectly. When something goes wrong, the IT admin should be promptly informed, so they can take care of the problem as soon as possible and hence assure the highest service level.
PRTG does not only alarm your IT admins that something is wrong, but it also guarantees that you are enjoying all the benefits of Fortigate while delivering the best ROI.
Reasons for integrating Fortinet into PRTG
How PRTG defines sensors
In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, e.g. the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, the free space of a disk drive. On average you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
Paessler already has a lot of experience with integrating Fortinet into PRTG. Here are the reasons why so many of our customers use both products:
Many protocols provided
Preconfigured FortiGate sensors in PRTG
PRTG comes with sensors for monitoring your FortiGate firewalls out-of-the-box. The FortiGate System Statistics sensor monitors CPU and memory usage, sessions, uptime, as well as the conserver mode of a FortiGate firewall. The FortiGate VPN Overview sensor (BETA) monitors VPN connections of the FortiGate system, for example, the number of connected SSL clients.
What's more: Fortinet has a very good documentation of their MIB files so that it is very easy to create custom sensors in PRTG for monitoring your Fortinet devices the way you need.
With PRTG it is possible to see all sensors, regardless of the protocol they use, in one interface. Therefore, IT admins are alerted when something goes wrong instantly.
Get different insight levels
The variety of protocols allows to gain different insight levels:
- Through SNMP you get information about availability, performance, and network traffic of your devices and about the status and performance of your servers.
- With NetFlow you dive into the traffic details and do some analysis of bandwidth consumption.
- The SNMP Traps keep you informed about critical aspects of the device or service, for example: internal high temperatures.
- With Syslog you stay up to date on critical events that the device detects, like changes on the configuration of the device.
With PRTG Network Monitor you customize the information that will be received and stored. You can build a time frame report containing enough analytic information to observe behavior patterns, detect unusual behavior, and predict for any networking resource saturation.
