Increase the stability and reliability of your virtual environment with PRTG

 i How PRTG defines sensors

In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, e.g. the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, the free space of a disk drive. On average you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.

Virtual environments

Virtual environments are important parts of an IT architecture and can no longer be neglected. These environments must be monitored professionally to ensure the smooth functioning of a business’s IT. Paessler’s network monitoring offers comprehensive real-time monitoring which ensures the stability and reliability of virtual environments. Hyper-V monitoring lets you take full advantage of all that virtual systems have to offer.

iVirtualization is the process of creating a virtual version of something like computer hardware. It involves using specialized software to create a virtual or software-created version of a computing resource rather than the actual version of the same resource.

Overcome the drawbacks of virtualization with Hyper-V sensors

In addition to various advantages, e.g. a more effective use of resources, virtualization (contrary to physical environments) also comes with some drawbacks.

For example, load peaks on one virtual machine can affect the performance of "neighboring” virtual systems on the host server. And in the event of critical errors — whether it be in the network connection or on the host itself — several virtual servers are affected at the same time and work comes to a standstill. These shortcomings are overcome with Hyper-V sensors.

Hyper-V sensors in PRTG

With a hypervisor like Microsoft Hyper-V, all the threads of your virtual systems run together. PRTG uses its powerful Hyper-V sensors to perform in-depth monitoring of virtual machines and their hosts, and then arranges the extracted data into neat, customizable dashboards. You therefore get convenient access to important information for the planning, testing, and monitoring of virtual environments. PRTG also alerts you immediately if your virtual environments are in need of attention.

Specially developed sensors are quick and easy to configure. This means you can adjust your network as needed and quickly analyze each bit of relevant data. With PRTG, you will discover and fix errors promptly. Our Hyper-V sensors keep an eye on server availability and other important system parameters, 24/7. PRTG Network Monitor is all you need for the monitoring of Hyper-V servers and virtual machines.

With PRTG, everyone will work with peace of mind.

Hyper-V monitoring on one central dashboard

Hyper-V server monitoring

For virtual machines to function, their host must be both stable and reliable. We therefore recommend monitoring the servers that host your virtual machines. Among other things, our preconfigured sensors monitor the system status and CPU load and consolidate this information into one central dashboard.

Virtual machines

You can also use our preconfigured sensors to monitor your virtual machines. Virtual environments require lots of resources and can hinder the performance of your network. Monitoring virtual environments can therefore also take a toil. We recommend only monitoring your most important virtual machines, such as those that run your main applications.

Hyper-V storage

Virtual machines are allocated storage space on the host server. When this space becomes full, you may experience malfunctions or even crashes. Our sensor monitors the read/write values and number of errors on a Hyper-V host.

Minimize work interruptions

PRTG will determine the amount of resources used by every network connection and host server. It allows for continuous server availability and thus prevents losses in productivity.

Balance out virtual machines

The PRTG Hyper-V sensors divert attention to imbalances in VMs, and thereby help to avoid drops in performance. If too many resource-hungry virtual machines are running on one host server, for example, you run the risk of encountering serious problems, including the crashing of your system.

danger white

Conserve critical resources

PRTG restricts the excessive use of critical resources. It allows for a balanced load distribution by identifying host servers that are not used to capacity, and by showing the amount of free disk space in your Hyper-V Cluster Shared Volume.

alarm white

Customize notifications

With PRTG, system administrators can define threshold values themselves and receive automatic, customized notifications when these values are reached.

Quickly uncover and remove sources of errors

You are not only informed of problems, but can also see where the sources of errors lie. PRTG makes troubleshooting virtual environments a breeze.

This is how Hyper-V monitoring with PRTG works

iSyslog stands for System Logging Protocol and is a standard protocol used to send system log or event messages to a specific server, called a syslog server. It is primarily used to collect various device logs from several different machines in a central location for monitoring and review. The protocol is enabled on most network equipment such as routers, switches, firewalls, and even some printers and scanners. In addition, syslog is available on Unix and Linux based systems and many web servers including Apache.

Before starting a virtualization project, calculate the CPU, memory, and hard disk utilization of the programs which are to be incorporated into your virtual infrastructure. PRTG Network Monitor will deliver this information to allow administrators to estimate eventual impacts on their servers. Overloads and failures are therefore prevented.

The monitoring of virtual environments is done in four parts. First and foremost, you should monitor all of your network’s hardware components with SNMP sensors, for these components tend to have a lasting effect on your virtual infrastructure. Secondly, it is imperative that your Hyper-V host server hardware be monitored, for problems with VMs often lie in their underlying hardware. PRTG comes with Hyper-V host server sensors designed especially for this purpose. The third part involves the monitoring of individual virtual machines on your host servers with the PRTG Hyper-V Virtual Machine sensors, which are available by default. By doing so, you’ll easily obtain values such as CPU usage and read/write speed. Keep in mind that you don’t necessarily need to monitor each and every VM; it is often enough to only include those machines which are vital to your network. Finally, the operating systems of these critical systems should be monitored directly, e.g. via WMI.

Set your own threshold values

By setting limits in the sensors, you get to decide for yourself when it is time to intervene, before your virtual environment really causes a headache. You might cap the maximum permissible load at 75%, for example. If this value is reached, the system administrator will automatically receive an alert. PRTG provides a variety of different alarm options, including push notifications, text messages, emails, syslog messages, and SNMP traps. You can also choose to have PRTG launch an external program or play a ringtone.

In addition, thanks to PRTG you will restrict the excessive use of critical resources. Hyper-V monitoring allows you to optimize the use of resources by identifying host servers that are not used to capacity and by balancing the distribution of the load. The performance of all virtual machines suffers when a system is running at maximum capacity and performance. With Hyper-V monitoring, you can discover such incidents quickly and respond to them efficiently.

PRTG makes use of the following technologies

WMI

PRTG monitors Hyper-V via the WMI protocol (Windows Management Instrumentation). WMI is the most reliable way to transfer data with Hyper-V. As an alternative, you can also use performance counters.

SNMP

We use SNMP to monitor a variety of network components, including servers, routers, and switches, as well as applications and bandwidth. SNMP is compatible with all the biggest manufacturers and uses very few resources.

Packet sniffing

You can also use PRTG to monitor your traffic. Among other things, this includes filtering by IP addresses, data types, and protocols. Our software keeps a constant eye on your email traffic and immediately sounds the alarm if something is wrong in your network.
