Why does server rack monitoring make sense?
Servers are at the core of corporate IT. Many processes are built on smoothly running servers and in the event of failures, important data may not be available or entire business units may even be paralyzed.
To keep your well-planned server racks functioning without any incidents, reliable monitoring is essential. Server rack monitoring not only lets you know immediately when server failures occur, but also allows you to prevent many errors.
It is best to take care of appropriate monitoring when you plan and set up your server cabinets.
Two steps for comprehensive server rack monitoring with PRTG
Smooth functioning of the server hardware
Whether processors, memory, fans, power supplies, or other components – PRTG monitors all components of your server hardware in real time. This way you always know about the utilization and functionality of your servers.
PRTG also keeps an eye on a secure power supply by monitoring PDUs. PRTG even automatically detects virtual servers and adds them to the monitoring.

Physical security of your server racks
Many companies neglect the physical security of server racks and server cabinets. Potential threats to your servers include:
- Unauthorized access by unauthorized people
- Server room fires
- Environmental conditions such as excessive humidity or high temperatures in the server room
The monitoring solution PRTG combines the data from surveillance cameras and various external sensors, for example for measuring temperature and humidity, and displays it in a clear and structured way.
PRTG supports specific hardware vendors such as Kentix, Jacarta, APC, HWgroup, Netatmo, or egnite for this purpose.

How PRTG defines sensors
In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, e.g. the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, the free space of a disk drive. On average you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
PRTG provides more than 250 preconfigured sensors that allow you to add new devices and measurement data to your monitoring in just a few clicks. The following sensors, among others, are available for server rack monitoring:
SNMP Cisco UCS Chassis sensor
This sensor monitors the health of a Cisco UCS chassis and measures general operating parameters, power, and temperature, among other things.
SNMP APC Hardware sensor
This sensor monitors the status of the uninterruptible power supply using an APC UPS device via SNMP.
This sensor monitors the state of the hard disks in Dell PowerEdge servers via SNMP.

PRTG and Rittal – the ideal combination for 100% available servers
Rittal offers a scalable and comprehensive product portfolio around the CMC III for the acquisition of environmental parameters, which can be used to measure humidity or server room temperature, or to monitor access sensors, smoke detectors, and leakages.
In addition, other Rittal components can be integrated into PRTG such as the PDU or air conditioning.
