PRTG: All-in-one LAN monitoring
LAN monitoring with PRTG: This is how it works
Bandwidth is measured as the amount of data that can be transferred from one point to another within a network in a specific amount of time. Typically, bandwidth is expressed as a bitrate and measured in bits per second (bps). It refers to the transmission capacity of a connection and is an important factor when determining the quality and speed of a network.

LAN monitoring lets you keep track of your entire local network, including your workstations, routers, switches, servers, and printers. PRTG monitors your LAN and sends notifications about connection problems, limited availability, or overloaded server.
PRTG uses SNMP, Packet Sniffing, NetFlow, and other flow protocols for monitoring your LAN.
SNMP is used the most. It is easy to set up and requires only a minimum amount of bandwidth and CPU. Individual data packets can be analyzed using Packet Sniffing, while NetFlow technology is used for the monitoring of Cisco devices.
Pre-defined sensors can also be used immediately in PRTG for other Flow technologies, such as IPFIX, sFlow and jFlow.
More than just LAN: Monitoring distributed networks and WANs is no problem with PRTG
Distributed networks: Monitor your sites from one central location. You can monitor separate LANs with our Remote Probes - with only one PRTG license. Remote Probes collect monitoring data. Your core server evaluates this LAN monitoring data and immediately sounds the alarm if there are problems.
Remote Probes may be installed both in the same network as your core server or in other networks if the latter benefit from continuous Internet connections.
WAN: Wide area networks can stretch across several countries (or continents) and are therefore often prone to errors. In many cases, WANs contain vital business data and are used to run important applications. If you wish to increase employee productivity, then these networks must never be down. PRTG is a centralized monitoring solution for all your WANs.
PRTG also provides you with a comprehensive overview of your virtual private network (VPN).

PRTG keeps an eye on these 5 pillars of LAN monitoring
Many administrators have yet to set up monitoring for their LAN networks - with disastrous effects.
When problems occur, it often takes a long time to find the bugs behind them. This costs both time and peace of mind.
Meanwhile, employees or customers are unable to access important features, resulting in an unnecessary waste of resources.
The following five elements are those which should by all means be monitored:
All inclusive monitoring of your
LAN with PRTG Network Monitor
Workstation
In many sectors, employees need high-performance workstation computers, such as those used for video or 3D processing. Workstation functionality is thus paramount to productivity. From the hard disk to the CPU: with PRTG, you're always in the know.
Router
All network data passes via the routers. They are the hubs of your LAN, and therefore must be monitored. The sooner you see your routers overloading, the quicker you'll be able to take countermeasures. PRTG lets you keep a constant eye on their status.
Switches
As distribution nodes, your switches are also under extreme pressure. All it takes is one single switch to overload for your entire LAN network to suffer. Never lose sight of your switches with PRTG. If a switch overloads, you'll notice it at once.
Server
PRTG monitors all kinds of hardware and servers. It supports all major manufacturers like Cisco, HP, Oracle or Dell. Whether database, mail, or web servers: PRTG gives you an uninterrupted overview and total control so your servers can run both smoothly and flawlessly. And you'll be notified quickly at the very first sign of trouble.
Bandwidth
How much network bandwidth do you have? Which devices and applications need how much bandwidth? With PRTG, you'll have your finger on the pulse of your bandwidth. And that means you can ensure the hassle-free operation of your company or organization.
PRTG improves your LAN at all levels
Accessibility
Your LAN network should be completely operational at all times. Example: a router switches off at night - without your knowledge. Scenarios like this are virtually impossible with PRTG. You can monitor the uptime of your network any time you like by using an SNMP System Uptime Sensor.
Security
Firewalls are attacked countless times each and every day. As an administrator, you must be notified immediately if your firewall is down. A PRTG Ping Sensor indicates the accessibility of your firewall in real time. Should your firewall crash, you'll immediately receive an SMS, e-mail, or other type of push notification. PRTG monitors firewalls from different vendors such as Cisco, Fortinet or Sonicwall.
Performance
Your company or organization is experiencing continuous growth? An increase in employees leads to a greater amount of traffic - and even more devices. This automatically results in bottlenecks. With PRTG, you can monitor devices comprehensively with just one central tool, such as the SNMP Hardware Status Sensor.
All-in-one LAN monitoring sensors
The following sensors can be used for LAN monitoring with PRTG:
Packet Sniffer
Monitors the headers of data packets that pass a local network using a built-in packet sniffer. It can show the following traffic types (analyzes only header traffic!):
- Chat (IRC, AIM)
- Citrix
- FTP/P2P
- Mail, WWW
- Remote control (RDP, SSH, Telnet, VNC)
Packet Sniffer Sensor
NetFlow V5
Shows traffic for NetFlow V5-supported devices, split by type and is able to divide traffic into channels. Traffic types include:
- Chat (IRC, AIM)
- Citrix
- FTP/P2P
- Mail, WWW
- Remote control (RDP, SSH, Telnet, VNC)
NetFlow v5 Sensor
NetFlow V9
Shows traffic for NetFlow v9-supported devices, split by type and is able to divide traffic into channels. Traffic types include:
- Chat (IRC, AIM)
- Citrix
- FTP/P2P
- Mail, WWW
- Remote control (RDP, SSH, Telnet, VNC)
NetFlow v9 Sensor
WMI
Monitors various parameters and services using WMI like free disk space, status of SharePoint, SQL and Exchange Servers, or Windows processes.
Windows Network Card
Monitors bandwidth usage and traffic on a network interface using WMI or Windows Performance Counters and can show among others:
- Total traffic on the network card
- Number of received and sent packets
- Number of discards, errors, unicast packets and unknown protocols
Windows Network Card Sensor

What is a sensor?
In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, e.g. the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, the free space of a disk drive. On average you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
Although many administrators already have one or more network monitoring tools, they are not always satisfied.
Switching to PRTG is easy: with over 250 pre-configured sensors, PRTG quickly has a grasp of your network. Its Auto Discovery feature automatically searches for devices and creates sensors. PRTG is thus configured speedily and conveniently. Switching from Nagios or other tools take no time at all.

Practical tip: “Hey Gerald, what would you tell administrators looking to use PRTG as a NetFlow Analyzer?”
“Cisco has continuously developed the NetFlow technology. Administrators must therefore find out beforehand which NetFlow version is supported by their routers and switches. With the right PRTG sensors, setting up NetFlow monitoring is quick and easy.”
Gerald Schoch, technical editor at Paessler AG
