PRTG and SNMP
SNMP Client - Monitor And Analyze Bandwidth Usage With PRTG
What is SNMP? The Simple Network Management Protocol is used by network management systems to monitor devices that may be in need of some kind of attention. SNMP consists of a set of standards, including an Application Layer protocol and a database schema. An SNMP client can be used to monitor bandwidth usage of routers and switches port-by-port as well as device readings like memory, CPU load etc.
The Paessler Router Traffic Grapher supports data acquisition via SNMP (as well as packet sniffing and NetFlow).
PRTG collects the required data and information from the SNMP capable devices. SNMP Versions 1 (base standard), 2C (64 bit counters) and 3 (authentication and encryption) are supported as well as 32-bit and 64-bit counters. The SNMP sensors can be set up for four different procedures: monitoring of standard traffic data, monitoring of Windows data, monitoring of proprietary data and the direct creation of a sensor when the particular address of SNMP data is known.
Using PRTG as an SNMP client is a sensible and popular solution, and we have received a lot of positive feedback:
"As one of the co-inventor's of SNMP ever so long ago, it is always great to find such elegantly simple implementations of SNMP out there" Marty Schoffstall
"This is the best product I have seen for SNMP graphing. It is very easy to use and appears to be very powerful. I just wanted to extend our appreciation for a well made application.", Rich Marsiglia, PCI
