Why is server monitoring important?

iA server is a computer or system that provides resources, data, services, or programs to other computers, known as clients, over a network. In theory, whenever computers share resources with client machines they are considered servers. There are many types of servers, including web servers, mail servers, and virtual servers.

Best possible data communication can be an important key factor for business success.
If your servers are not performing as they should, the data that your business relies on
for mission-critical tasks won’t reach its destination on time.

So, powerful server monitoring is the best way for companies to ensure that servers are
operating as they should and functioning at the best possible level; and if they’re not,
admins should be proactively notified of possible performance issues, making it possible
to act in time.

What can remote server monitoring do for you?

Remote server monitoring lets you:

    Check performance issues

    Monitor the overall
    performance and availability
    of your remote servers

Nowadays, IT and network infrastructures are more distributed than ever before.
Companies have their devices and services distributed over local networks, branch offices, data centers,
and in the cloud. Naturally, admins wish to centrally monitor all distributed networks and infrastructure.

server monitoring in real time

Remote server monitoring lets you monitor your servers in real time regarding availability, accessibility, and overall reliability. With remote server monitoring, your servers are checked at regular intervals to ensure that you always know their status.

improve server stability

Sysadmins monitor their servers remotely because they wish to improve their stability and performance. If certain threshold values are exceeded, you’ll receive a warning message so you can immediately take action.

analyze values

Sysadmins analyze the values they receive from their monitoring software to develop courses of action. When studied over the long term, these values can help optimize various aspects that are responsible for the performance of your network, such as capacity planning.

Remote monitoring for all types of servers

Here is a list of all types of servers you would want to monitor, even in distributed networks.
Let us also include a few examples of the PRTG sensors, so you can get started monitoring right away:

Mail servers are sensitive issues for companies. When mail server glitches occur, employees are quick to complain, putting the support department under stress. With PRTG, you can monitor your mail servers permanently and be alerted in a timely fashion. IMAP, POP3, SMTP, and much more; we supply more than a dozen sensors for your mail server monitoring!

Website performance is a deciding factor for many companies, even more so when they offer products and services via their websites. PRTG also makes a whole range of sensors available for your web server monitoring (for example IIS or Apache).

Practically all company information is stored in databases. When it comes to databases, performance is also the basis for the effective functioning of each department. PRTG offers a variety of sensors that are available for immediate use. These include sensors for the monitoring of MySQL, Oracle SQL, and Microsoft SQL.

If firms can’t access information, businesses can crash. For example, it’s not uncommon for administrators to search for a specific FTP server monitoring tool. But PRTG has you fully covered in this area as well. You have around 20 sensors just for your file server monitoring alone. Monitoring of NAS devices and storage area networks (SAN) is also supported by PRTG.

It’s not always the server

So, let us show you how a monitoring solution like PRTG can tell you what the problem is and, of course, help you with typical network problems as well:

PRTG is an IT monitoring tool that includes server, network, bandwidth, cloud, application, and IP monitoring.
Our award-winning software functions as an all-in-one monitoring suite that is also able to monitor cloud environments, virtual machines, hardware, and networks. PRTG is a unified monitoring solution.
Each device or service that has an IP address, or is reachable via IP and speaks a protocol can be monitored by probes in PRTG.

Upon configuration, PRTG automatically creates the first probe, called the local probe. It runs on the same machine as the PRTG core server and monitors all devices in your LAN, using the sensors you have configured.

You can extend monitoring to your distributed networks by installing one or more remote probes. With remote probes, you can monitor different subnetworks that are separated from your PRTG core server by a firewall, and you can keep an eye on remote locations. They’re especially useful if you want to distribute monitoring load by taking it from the system running the PRTG core server and putting it on one or more systems running a remote probe.

Wait, what? Tell me about those remote probes

Easy: There are several situations that make it necessary to work with remote probes in the same LAN or in remote locations. Here are 3 of many more reasons to work with remote probes:

You run a PRTG Hosted Monitor instance and

secure network

You want to monitor systems in a secure network

all locations

And a very common problem in 2020:
You have more than one location or employees working
from home and you need to make sure that services
are available from all locations.
