PRTG Network Monitor is the perfect tool for monitoring home networks: For basic monitoring needs, Paessler offers a free version of PRTG. With more than 250 supported sensor types, the home network monitor is a comprehensive software that offers you tools for availability and bandwidth monitoring, for monitoring virtual server, and web monitoring.
In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, e.g. the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, the free space of a disk drive. On average you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.

What can I monitor with PRTG?
The home network monitor allows you to use up to 100 sensors, which is often enough to manage small business or home networks. PRTG supports among others SNMP, WMI, and packet sniffing. You can use the home network monitor to check network activity, and to monitor network devices, such as servers. For this, PRTG includes different tools to monitor your whole network:
