What do PRTG Hosted Monitor and PRTG Network Monitor have in common?
Both PRTG Hosted Monitor and PRTG Network Monitor are feature-rich monitoring solutions. They monitor your entire infrastructure. This gives you a complete overview of traffic, bandwidth, availability, resources, and CPU load, to name just a few. Both editions support various vendors such as Cisco, Dell, HPE, IBM, NetApp, Amazon, VMware, Citrix, Oracle, and many more.
Both editions are suitable not only as network, application, and cloud monitoring tools. Monitoring covers all areas of your IT infrastructure, including:
- Applications (local and cloud-based software)
- Cloud services (Dropbox, AWS, Google Drive, GitLab, etc.)
- Databases (Oracle SQL, Microsoft SQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc.)
- Hardware (systems, devices, servers, routers, switches, etc.)
PRTG Hosted Monitor and PRTG Network Monitor can be used for virtual, cloud-based, or hybrid environments.
The hosted solution: PRTG Hosted Monitor
PRTG Hosted Monitor is the subscription-based monitoring tool solution where Paessler takes over the hosting of your PRTG instances on reliable AWS servers for you. You can choose the region in which you want the servers to be located. The cloud-based edition is suitable for MSPs (Managed Service Providers), among others, who take over and manage IT on behalf of their customers. With PRTG Hosted Monitor as an SaaS solution, MSPs remain flexible: they can upgrade or downgrade their subscription at any time.
The on-premises solution: PRTG Network Monitor
PRTG Network Monitor is a locally installed monitoring solution. You take care of the hosting and need a dedicated server in your network. PRTG Network Monitor is suitable for small to medium-sized businesses where small IT teams or individual administrators take care of the monitoring.
On-premises vs. subscription model
What are the benefits of subscription-based monitoring?
No dedicated hardware required
You don't need your own data center for PRTG Hosted Monitor. This pays off for you: With cloud-based monitoring, you don't have to buy any additional hardware or provide a server with sufficient capacity.
Instantly ready for use
As you don't install the hosted edition of PRTG yourself, the subscription-based monitoring solution is ready to go out of the box. This means that there is no time or effort required to set up and configure the software. Your IT team can start monitoring from the browser right away.
Highly available monitoring
You benefit from highly available monitoring. As Paessler provides the servers for hosting, a different server can be used immediately as a replacement in the event of a server failure. This means that you do not need to provide another server with subscription-based monitoring. There is no downtime and your operations and processes are not disrupted.
No administrative effort
Paessler also takes care of the administration of the monitoring solution for you. You automatically receive the latest software versions with new features and improvements. This means that your monitoring solution is always up to date. You do not need to schedule time windows or staff for updates. Your administrators can concentrate entirely on monitoring.
Highest level of data and IT security
Updates are automatically applied and security gaps are closed immediately. This increases your IT security and the security of your hosted instance. In addition, your data is backed up regularly without you having to take any further action. Your benefit: you receive the highest level of data security.
“When we evaluate new third-party services for our company, we pay special attention to cloud-compatibility. We want to be as independent as possible from an on-premise infrastructure. We would like to have as few points of failure as possible, which is why PRTG Hosted Monitor was just the right product for us. A departure from technical responsibility, a reduction of costs, focusing on core competencies, vulnerability through 3rd party... just to name a few keywords.”
Dario, Infrastructure Support Engineer at GCA Altium AG
What are the advantages of an on-premises solution?
Financial planning security
With PRTG Network Monitor, there is only one payment for the license including maintenance for one year. This ensures full cost control.
Cluster failover backup
With your license, you get a single failover node. If the primary master of the cluster is not connected or fails, another cluster node takes over immediately. For you, this means that your monitoring is fail-safe.
Keep a constant eye on your monitoring – even while on the go
PRTG is set up in a matter of minutes and can be used on a wide variety of mobile devices.
How PRTG defines sensors
In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, e.g. the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, the free space of a disk drive. On average you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
PRTG Hosted Monitor
PRTG Network Monitor
With PRTG Hosted Monitor, you stay flexible thanks to the subscription model that can be cancelled at any time.
You can switch between five different pricing plans at any time should your IT infrastructure grow. And you can upgrade and even downgrade your subscription as needed.
With PRTG Network Monitor, you get a perpetual license. The license supports an unlimited number of users. If you use a maximum of 100 sensors, you can even use PRTG Network Monitor as freeware. You receive all product updates and support via a maintenance plan.
Prices are based on the number of sensors you need. This means that you only pay for the sensors you actually use. Subscription-based monitoring is billed on a monthly or annual basis, as desired.
The licenses are based on a fixed number of sensors. Thus, there is a fixed price per server license.
