PRTG Network Monitor detects disruptions in your network

Many large and medium-sized companies have network infrastructures composed of several local networks which together form a single “wide area network” (WAN). And like local networks, WANs are prone to errors.

WAN errors can be caused by applications that use more bandwidth than expected or an excessive use of applications such as VoIP or video conferencing tools. These malfunctions can quickly lead to a drop in performance, with applications and data connections slowing down considerably.

In such cases, a monitoring tool like PRTG is a wise choice. With PRTG, you can identify network disruptions from one centralized location and take all the right steps to get your network back in shipshape condition.

PRTG monitors WAN infrastructures of all sizes

Companies need a tool that will monitor their entire network, especially when employees work in a separate branch or remotely.

If your central network goes down without you knowing it – even for a short period of time – then many crucial applications go down with it. And that becomes a huge hassle for everyone involved.

A tool like PRTG Network Monitor can help you avoid downtime by monitoring the devices and programs that are connected to your mainframes and sounding the alarm in the event of a malfunction.

The WAN has crashed yet again?

Insufficient bandwidth or problems with individual devices can lead to major network errors and disruptions. The culprit may be an improperly configured router or firewall or simply a network adapter with a glitch.

These (and other) error sources often result in applications not working as they should. For those who use the network,
this means delayed emails and slow database queries. Backups are done incorrectly or remain incomplete.
And bandwidth hogs such as video streaming tools bring business-critical applications to a halt.

Tricks for speeding up WAN connections

If PRTG detects a snag in your WAN, there are a few things you can do to fix it:

user blue

Assign applications to specific categories and only allow certain users to access the corresponding programs.

packet blue

Use compression tools to reduce the size of data packets and thereby the amount of data to be transferred.

settings blue

Use efficient protocols to minimize the transfer of data. For example, switch to UDP if possible, and avoid bandwidth-intensive TCP/IP.

firewall blue

Check installed devices such as routers and firewalls to make sure they can handle the expected traffic. Incorrectly configured firewalls can disrupt or even completely block traffic.

Monitor your entire network with PRTG

PRTG not only monitors wide area networks, but can also be used to monitor wireless and local networks.

An all-in-one monitoring tool, PRTG keeps a constant eye on your entire WAN, LAN, and WLAN.
