PRTG Linux monitoring: How it works

Set it and forget it. Yes, really.

PRTG's sophisticated Linux monitoring sensors track every aspect of your Linux network. Each sensor monitors specific parameters. Define warning and error thresholds for each parameter, and you'll be automatically alerted when the value falls below it, so you can troubleshoot and fix the issue.

Our preconfigured, Linux-specific sensors come out-of-the-box with each license of PRTG.

SNMP Linux sensors

SSH sensors

  • SSH Disk Free sensor to keep track of available disk space
  • SSH INodes Free sensor to monitor the free index nodes on disks of Linux/Unix and macOS systems
  • SSH Load Average sensor to track average system load at 1, 5, and 15-minute intervals
  • SSH Meminfosensor for monitoring memory usage
  • SSH Remote Ping sensor to track connection speed between Linux/Unix/macOS and other devices, including packet loss percentages, and minimum, maximum, and average response times

SSH SAN sensors

Script sensors

  • Python Script Advancedsensor for monitoring JSON and XML script values in multiple channels
  • SSH Script sensor to monitor execution time and values returned by executable files and scripts in one channel

Linux network monitoring: FAQ

1. What is PRTG Linux network monitoring?

PRTG is a proprietary software tool that also monitors Linux network performance and hardware health. The solution is Windows-based, but the used technology enables you to configure a Linux monitoring environment, so you can track your Linux network's stats and spot potential issues from one user-friendly location.

2. Can I install a PRTG core server or probe on Linux?

No. You can only do it on Windows. But, once you've installed the PRTG server, you can download the included, free PRTG app for desktop that also runs on Linux. With this app, you can monitor and manage your complete IT infrastructure from your Linux system. Alternatively, try our fully Linux-compatible hosted monitoring solution PRTG Hosted Monitor.

3. Do you plan on developing an edition of PRTG Network Monitor that is compatible with Linux?

Yes and no. We do not plan to develop a complete PRTG Network Monitor edition for Linux. However, we’ll release our brand-new Multi-Platform Probe in February 2024, which runs on all your Linux and Unix systems and offers the full PRTG feature set.

4. How much does PRTG Linux network monitoring cost?

We're so confident you'll love PRTG that it comes with a free, no-obligation 30-day trial. Should you decide to keep using it, you can choose from:

  • A perpetual, on-premises PRTG Network Monitor license – ideal for small to medium-sized organizations
  • A cloud-based PRTG Hosted Monitor subscription
  • An on-premises, subscription-based PRTG Enterprise Monitor license that supports unlimited devices – ideal for large enterprises

5. What is a sensor in PRTG?

In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, for example the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, or the free space on a disk drive.

On average, you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
