Bechtle IT-Systemhaus in Bielefeld provides IT services to mid-sized businesses, corporations, and public-sector clients. For years, the team monitored customer systems using whatever tool was already in place - often open-source software or whatever the customer happened to be running. Every new project meant learning a new tool. That cost time and money. The team needed one standardized solution - agentless, easy to set up, flexible enough to handle anything from wireless networks to production floor equipment.
Bechtle introduced PRTG Enterprise Monitor first for its own internal systems - and the results were strong enough to make it the standard across all customer projects.
The agentless architecture was a key factor. Agents installed on customer hardware create extra load, open communication channels, and raise security concerns. PRTG uses standard protocols like SNMP and WMI instead. Remote probes allow secure monitoring without a VPN - encrypted data flows to the PRTG core server through a single defined port.
At STIEBEL ELTRON, Bechtle used PRTG to monitor a critical wireless network across the production facility. Predefined Cisco sensors made integration fast. PRTG stores all monitoring data at its original interval, giving Bechtle proof of SLA compliance on demand.
An unexpected use case emerged: monitoring AGVs -- automated guided vehicles, or "ants" - via Wi-Fi checkpoints. A simple ping flags any AGV that stops responding. If an ant goes silent, it may signal a wireless coverage gap -- and Bechtle gets alerted.
