PUCRS runs a full university campus in Porto Alegre, including a hospital, a science museum, a technology park, and a brain research institute. The infrastructure team is responsible for keeping all of it connected: servers, access points, switches, databases, data centers, and the turnstiles at campus entry points.
The previous monitoring tool required building sensors in-house for each network component and application. That overhead slowed response times and reduced agility.
Without visibility into storage growth and bandwidth trends, the team couldn't plan investments before capacity ran out. They needed a predictive view, not just a reactive one.
After evaluating multiple solutions, PUCRS chose PRTG for requiring less in-house development and covering more ground out of the box. Sensors went across servers, access points, switches, databases, data centers, and campus applications.
PRTG maps historical bandwidth consumption for every device. That data drives capacity planning: the team projects infrastructure growth and allocates investments before operations are affected.
The data centers are monitored beyond IT. PRTG tracks CO2 levels, temperature, humidity, air conditioning, and door closures.
Campus turnstiles and remote teaching platforms run through the same system. When demand for distance learning surged, the team had real-time visibility into application load.
Paessler partner Eleven Soluções em Tecnologia developed additional sensors for IP PABX voice channels and IP address usage, helping optimize telephony costs and maintain access reliability.
