DR. ERLER KLINIKEN is a surgical and orthopedic hospital in the Nuremberg metropolitan region. IT underpins every aspect of patient care. When systems fail, the stakes are high.
Before PRTG, the team operated reactively. Problems were reported when something stopped working. They evaluated open-source tools like Nagios but ruled them out: configuring and maintaining them would consume time a hospital IT team doesn't have.
They needed a mature, ready-to-run solution to monitor IT and clinical systems around the clock.
PRTG now monitors the full infrastructure 24/7: web and mail servers, core switches, storage systems, virtual and physical servers, and databases. Clinical systems covered include the hospital information system (HIS), picture archiving and communication system (PACS), medication systems, and payment terminals. Parameters include runtime, disk capacity, LAN interfaces, and RAM and CPU usage.
A server room temperature issue caused by a partial building management failure was caught early via iLO monitoring. PRTG flagged the anomaly before hardware was at risk.
To keep the hospital VPN lean, PRTG was integrated with the Teamwire messenger via a custom bot. Alerts reach IT staff through Teamwire, keeping VPN load minimal.
PRTG also satisfies the autonomous server room monitoring requirement under Germany's Hospital Future Act (KHZG).
Our main job as the IT team of a hospital is to make sure everything is always up and running, and above all, to ensure that patient care is administered smoothly. We don't have the time or the resources to implement open-source systems such as Nagios, or to maintain them with the help of support forums. With PRTG, we get a mature, user-friendly solution and unbeatable support from the manufacturer Paessler. We also love the fact that Paessler is a German company based in Nuremberg.
