Cloud-based, global offices, non-traditional IT team
Skyscanner is a global travel search platform operating across more than 50 nationalities. As a fully cloud-based business, it can't afford network downtime and it doesn't have a traditional internal IT department to manage it.
The monitoring solution the team was using required deep specialist knowledge to operate. That limited who could use it. It slowed down sensor deployment. And it created a support overhead the team couldn't sustain.
The core problem was speed. Skyscanner's cloud infrastructure changes constantly. New services spin up, network routes shift, and the monitoring tool needs to keep pace. The previous solution couldn't. Every change required specialist intervention, a bottleneck that didn't fit a lean, fast-moving team.
Skyscanner needed a tool that could automate routine monitoring, deploy sensors at speed, and free the team to focus on the network rather than the software managing it. PRTG delivered. Integrated with AWS using CloudFormation and PowerShell, sensor deployment became fully automated. With over 6,000 sensors in place, a number that changes daily, the team monitors all switches, tracks network utilization, and gets alerted before problems escalate.
Monitoring time dropped from half a day to 20 minutes. Sensors can be replicated and tasks automated, freeing the team to focus on the network instead.
PRTG also changed how the team relates to the rest of the business. System information is always logged and accessible. If anything blocks partner access to critical data, PRTG flags it. Predictable sensor patterns let the team plan ahead rather than just react.
Ultimately, people do better when they focus on the solution, not the tool. This is the mantra we live by at Skyscanner. Without PRTG, we’d still be spending half a day or more on monitoring our internal tools.
