The challenge

NOVIGADO Global was challenged to provide a solution for the design, implementation, and monitoring of the infrastructure for the national electronic toll network that included:

Configuration of communication equipment (switches and firewalls)
Creation of VPN tunnels between the different sites
Implementation of high-availability firewalls
Implementation of SD-WAN technology
Enabling teleworking for more than 100 users
Interoperability with different technologies such as Palo Alto, CheckPoint, and SonicWall for information exchange with third parties
Implementation of VLANs, MAC filtering, VLT on switches, routing, and policies
Monitoring the health status of key equipment such as servers and WAN/LAN communication devices
Monitoring of information exchange via FTP folders
Server monitoring

All this with the purpose of having a highly available communication and distribution of information between the electronic toll lanes and the control centers, for which it was required to have a tool that would provide real-time information on the status of the project at all levels.

The transmission medium used in most of the toll stations is satellite, which means constant changes in the quality of the link due to factors such as the weather, so it became imperative to react immediately when any of these links were to fail in order to ensure business continuity.

The solution

NOVIGADO Global was looking for a solution that would ensure high availability in Mexico’s national toll road network, so it undertook a benchmarking exercise to compare available tools and selected Paessler PRTG Network Monitor.

The company chose PRTG because of its business model, which allowed the company to have an unlimited sensor license for the first 30 days, with the support of the Pre-Sales team, which facilitated the start-up and made the difference to other solutions.

Within 45 days, including the trial period, NOVIGADO Global successfully implemented PRTG for monitoring the entire infrastructure, including communication equipment, servers, and video recorders.

The tool allowed the integration of Fortinet firewalls via SNMP, located in control centers and toll stations to monitor the health status of the communication links, as well as to have visibility of the VPN tunnels that interconnect the control centers with each other, and with each of the toll stations.

NOVIGADO Global was able to configure sensors that monitor the exchange of information with third parties through XML files deposited in FTP folders, so that when one is not received or is not processed within the established time, PRTG generates alerts through emails, as well as push notifications in the PRTG apps for iOS or Android, to react and remedy incidents in time, thus avoiding economic penalties.

Thanks to PRTG, NOVIGAO Global has maps that allow them to have the status of 4 control centers and more than 100 toll stations in a central overview, displayed in real time on the NOC/SOC video wall.

NOVIGADO Global uses a PRTG license to monitor around 2,500 sensors and the assigned equipment serves the needs of more than 100 people working to maintain Mexico's national toll road network.

NOVIGADO Global fulfills the project by maintaining the required level of service in the network operated by Caminos y Puentes Federales de Ingresos y Servicios Conexos (CAPUFE) in its more than 100 toll stations using PRTG.

Sebastián Medina explains: “The work we do is very important because we have to maintain the availability of communications 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As this is a mission-critical project, when a link goes down you forget about applications and databases. That is why we designed the project to have redundancy, that is, two links per site to always have at least one available. This way, we can guarantee that any vehicle can pass between toll stations using electronic toll collection as a payment method.”
