Riverford Organic Farmers delivers organic vegetable boxes to around 50,000 customers every week. On any given day, up to £500,000 of produce and meat sits in refrigerators and freezers across multiple sites. If cooling fails overnight, the damage is severe.
Without environmental monitoring, failures would only be discovered when staff arrived in the morning. Without network monitoring, connectivity outages at remote sites could go undetected until customers were affected.
PRTG now monitors 1,500 sensors across the entire operation: servers, switches, firewalls, access points, Wi-Fi, and the environmental systems keeping produce fresh.
Warehouse and butchery teams have PRTG dashboards on screens at key locations. Alerts fire automatically if temperatures drift outside acceptable ranges.
The value of after-hours monitoring became clear during an MPLS outage at the ISP. PRTG detected packet loss from the headquarters firewall late in the evening. The IT team received the alert, resolved the issue that night, and prevented all remote sites from disconnecting by morning. Without that alert, the incident would have cost around £10,000 in missed deliveries.
Trend data supports capacity planning. Monthly meetings use PRTG reports to document proactive actions and avoided outages.
There are around 20 people within the business across various departments using PRTG who look at the dashboard, but the beauty of it is that we don't really have to look at it. In terms of its day-to-day use, we just let it do its thing, and we just act on alerts when necessary.
