January 21st 2011 – Billing Tool for PRTG Version 1.0

We released a billing tool which retrieves monitoring data via the PRTG API and generates bills in PDF format. You can use this tool to bill your customers for certain usage reported by a specific PRTG sensor. Templates and calculation are customizable to fit many use cases. We provide this .NET open source tool as a basis to develop your own billing applications.

January 17th 2011 – Version 8.2.0.1898/1899

  • [Core Server] New database format:
    • We implemented a new, faster database system for log, ToDo, and Toplist data. This new system is much faster and will provide a much swifter user experience, especially on systems with 500 and more sensors. In our tests we found that it can be up to 300 times faster, depending on your system and configuration
    • After upgrading to V8.2.x or later your previous databases will be converted during PRTG’s startup - which can take between a few seconds and a few minutes. Only the potentially huge multi-gigabyte Toplist databases will be converted in the background after the startup, as soon as the monitoring process has been restarted. During the conversion you may see drops of Toplists (gaps in your Toplist data) whenever the system performance is not capable of supporting simultaneous conversion and monitoring. Note: The old database files will be deleted 70 days after the database upgrade.

  • [Sensors] Important change for Ping and Port sensors:
    • Their time values no longer cover the DNS resolution in their measurements, now values are analogous to the Windows built-in Ping command. Depending on the type of DNS entry used for the parent devices this can change the values dramatically to smaller values. For devices that are set up using IP addresses the values do not change at all.

  • [Auto-Discovery] Massive upgrade of the Auto-Discovery system:
    • Auto-Discovery now covers 95% of the available sensor types, depending on your network you may see 20-50% more sensors during an auto-discovery scan.
    • Added various options to enter IP ranges for auto-discovery, including Class A address ranges and IP lists. Note: Only subnets with up to 65536 IP addresses can be discovered.
    • Added 5 new device templates to the Auto-Discovery system, including “Linux SNMP”, “Server RDP”, and “XEN Server”.
    • Users can now select the time of day when daily and weekly auto-discoveries are performed (default is 4 a.m.).
    • WebGUI shows a note about potentially degraded performance while auto-discoveries are running.
  • [Device Templates] Massive upgrade of the device template system:
    • Now all sensors that make sense to be stored in device templates will be used (covering about 95% of available sensor types).
  • [Sensors] 3 new sensor types:
    • New DHCP sensor checks whether a DHCP request is answered by a DHCP server in the network
    • New SSH VMware ESX(i) Disk Sensor monitors disk space on attached storage of VMware ESX and ESXi servers via SSH
    • New jFlow V5 Sensor supports Juniper jFlow (version 5) monitoring. Note: Sensor does not support sampling yet, please disable sampling on the device (see user manual).
  • New: [Sensors] Added an alternate connection method for VMware sensors (.NET required on the probe system), during testing we saw some situations where the alternate connection worked more reliably than the default one.
  • New: [Sensors] EXE/Script sensors now support environment variables (all environment variables have a "prtg_" prefix)

  • Version 8 marks a major leap forward for PRTG. We have implemented great new features including clustering and Google Maps, an updated user interface, a new manual, and many new sensor types. There were more than 1000 changes since version 7!
  • New: All-In Licensing for PRTG
    • With version 8, Paessler takes a revolutionary step and completely simplifies its licensing model. Using our new add-on-frede software product PRTG 8 you monitor your network without worrying about paying extra money for additional features. Everything is included in one license because we are confident this makes your work easier. Simply choose an installation size for your setup and benefit from the new functionalities PRTG brings to your network.

  • New: "PRTG Cluster" Failover Solution
    • Up to 5 PRTG instances ("Nodes") work together
    • A cluster consists of one primary instance of PRTG ("Master Node") and 1 to 4 secondary servers ("Failover Nodes")
    • Objective 1: Achieve 100% uptime for the monitoring solution. Not even a software update causes downtime for a PRTG cluster.
    • Objective 2: Automatic failover: If the primary node fails or looses connection to the cluster, another node immediately becomes the master server and manages notifications => Notifications are always sent, even if the primary master has no connectivity or has crashed.
    • Objective 3: Multiple points-of-presence monitoring: All nodes monitor all sensors all the time. This means that response times are measured from different locations in the network (LAN/WAN/VPN) and can be compared with each other. Additionally, aggregated up/downtimes can be computed.
    • And here comes the best part of this new feature - our customer-friendly-licensing: All PRTG licenses allow you to create a "Single Failover" installation (two installations of PRTG working together) with just one license key (additional license keys are required for 3 or more nodes).
    • This means that you don't pay extra to use PRTG's new high-availability feature (compare with other vendors!). We assume that most commercial PRTG installations will be "Single-Failover" installations (1 primary node plus 1 failover node).

  • New: Support for Google Maps in the web interface (maps that show red/green/etc. flags for down/up/etc. devices). Simply enter a postal address, city name, or geotag in the "location" field of groups and/or devices to populate the maps with live monitoring data!
  • New: Improved "Maps" feature: PRTG now includes 280 beautifully designed network icons and you can connect map objects with lines that follow their objects when they are moved. With the new editor, PRTG now supports you in creating maps of your whole network structure, even without additional background graphics.
