What is a Packet Analyzer?
A packet analyzer (also known as a packet sniffer) is a computer program or piece of computer hardware that can intercepts and logs traffic that goes over a digital network. A packet analyzer is is composed of two main parts. First, a network adapter that connects the sniffer to the existing network. Second, software that provides a way to log, see, or analyze the data collected by the device.

How does PRTG packet analyzer work?
PRTG uses its own Packet Sniffer sensors to detect issues with the data that flows across your network, and NetFlow sensors for Cisco hardware. It does this by monitoring data packet headers, identifying data types, and collecting this data. This data collection gives you a powerful source of information that allows you to identify multiple traffic types and their transfer rates.

The internal database of PRTG allows for fast and efficient storage of collected data. Optional ZIP file data backup is also offered as well as purging of old data. This keeps your system running smoothly without wasting disk space.
