PRTG Network Monitor is Paessler's powerful network management tool. The network port monitor detects all activity in your network, as well as application usage. With PRTG and its built-in network port monitor, network data can be captured, viewed, logged and analyzed. Thanks to its advanced analyzing functionality and flexible alerting system, PRTG is also an indispensable tool for Windows 7, Vista and XP network troubleshooting.

Which Technologies Does the Network Port Monitor Use?

PRTG supports SNMP, WMI, packet sniffing, NetFlow (and sFlow / jFlow)

  • WMI and SNMP collect bandwidth usage and performance data within your network, including port-by-port usage data for switches and routers.
  • The integrated packet sniffer calculates bandwidth usage by analyzing all data packets going through the network card of a PC, or it can be connected to a switch's so-called monitoring port.
  • Another option to measure bandwidth usage by IP address or by port is to use Cisco's NetFlow protocol, which is especially suited for high traffic networks. Many routers and switches from Cisco support this protocol.
  • As PRTG supports sFlow and jFlow, the software can also acquiere bandwidth usage data directly from HP and juniper devices.

Toplists: Monitor Which Port, Protocol or IP Uses Most Bandwidth

Not only do Packet Sniffer and xFlow sensors measure the total bandwidth usage, but they can also break down the traffic by IP address, port, protocol, and other parameters. The results are shown in so-called "Toplists".

PRTG - More Than a Network Port Monitor

However, PRTG is more than a bandwidth and port monitoring tool. Using our network reporting software, you can monitor network devices and Oracle databases, check network latency and packet delay variation, and perform Ethernet performance tests. It saves costs by avoiding outages, optimizing connections, saving time, and controlling service level agreements.
