What is Packet Sniffing?

Packet sniffing is a method used for analyzing bandwidth. PRTG Network Monitor includes a free packet sniffer, which you can use if your network devices do not support SNMP or NetFlow / sFlow. Packet sniffing can also be used to discern which application or IP address is accountable for bandwidth traffic in your network. The packet sniffer looks at every single data packet traveling through your network, analyzing its header and content in order to determine which protocol is causing the traffic.

With SNMP, NetFlow and packet sniffing, PRTG offers three bandwidth analyzing methods to choose from. This makes Paessler's software a great alternative to MRTG, which only supports SNMP network monitoring.

A freeware version of PRTG is available for professional and personal use. It is restricted to 10 sensors. For more advanced needs, prices for the commercial editions start at $400 / €300.

PRTG Network Monitor - More Than a Packet Sniffer

Apart from being a free packet sniffer, PRTG is also a network and server monitoring software: it measures latency jitter, checks the performance and uptime of network devices, and alerts you if a problem occurs. As it gives you a complete view of your network, PRTG is also a great network diagnostic tool and indispensable for wireless network troubleshooting.

Thanks to remote probes, PRTG is not only a LAN monitor but can also monitor WANs or multiple locations.
