Internet PING Test
What is an Internet PING Test?
One of the most basic and most widely used functions of PRTG Network Monitor is the Internet PING test. With the help of a PING test, you can check whether a network device such as a server responds, or a website is available. When you conduct an Internet PING test, you send a small data packet to the web server, and if it returns, you know that the website can be reached.
What Does a Failed PING Test Mean?
However, an unsuccessful PING does not automatically mean that your website is offline: one reason for a failed PING test, for example, could be a problem with your Internet connection.
What Does a Successful Internet PING Test Mean?
Nevertheless, a successful PING test does not confirm that your website is working properly, or that it is showing the correct content. In order to determine whether a certain text or image is shown on your website, of whether a transaction can be conducted properly, you can use PRTG's HTTP sensors.
PRTG Network Monitor
The PRTG network management tools offer much more than a simple PING utility. Paessler's network monitoring tool offers more than 115 different sensor types, including
- several SQL server monitoring sensors for advanced database monitoring needs
- SNMP, WMI, packet sniffing and NetFlow monitor sensors for bandwidth tracking
- Special sensors for monitoring virtual servers, the quality of VoIP connections, etc.
This functionality converts PRTG into an advanced SNMP server and network performance monitor, giving you a complete view of your network.
