PRTG Network Monitor is a comprehensive network monitoring solution, which offers two easy and inexpensive methods for monitoring the quality of VoIP connections: the VoIP monitoring manager includes a built-in QoS (Quality of Service) Sensor. It monitors factors that have a significant effect on VoIP quality, such as VoIP jitter, packet delay, packet loss, and VoIP latency. You can determine how much jitter, packet loss, etc. is acceptable for you, and set up notifications to warn you when or before those values are reached. This enables you to react quickly and take appropriate steps to maintain the quality of your VoIP connections, e.g. by prioritizing VoIP traffic or turning off applications which use a lot of bandwidth.

Apart from the QoS sensor, the VoIP monitoring manager also comes with a sensor for IP-SLA monitoring. The more expensive Cisco switches usually support IP-SLA, a technology which monitors the quality of the connection between those switches. The parameters that are checked are similar to those monitored by the QoS sensor: packet loss rate, VoIP network latency, jitter noise etc. While most vendors charge extra for IP SLA monitoring capabilities, it is included at no extra cost in all versions of PRTG - so if you go for the freeware version of our VoIP monitoring manager, you even get a free IP SLA monitor!
