Network Monitoring using PRTG Network Monitor

- Introduction video about PRTG Network Monitor
- First installation and first setup in your network of a trial version of PRTG
- PRTG-Installer and Trial License key from the www.paessler.com website
- Start the installer, chose English for the used language
- On the welcome screen, chose between Freeware, Trial- and Commercial version -> Trial version
- Enter registered name (usually the email-address with trial keys) and the key
- If “key is invalid”, please check if key and name are correctly copied & pasted (no spaces, etc.)
- Because first installation, there are a few essential settings to configure (username, password and Email-address for the PRTG Administrator), as well as Webserver IP and Port
- Start PRTG in default web-browser, logging in with default credentials
- On the Welcome Screen, chose “Network Auto Discovery”, then in a new group
- 3 types of Auto Discovery, standard, detailed and only for specific devices using certain templates
- Enter Class C-net (or segment) which shall be discovered -> Continue -> Group is added (“Auto-Discovery in progress”)
- What can be discovered: Devices which respond to SNMP (Switches, Routers, Firewalls, Linux-PCs, etc.), virtual servers (VMware, Hyper-V), Windows PCs, HTTP-, FTP-, DNS- and Mail-servers
- For each discovered device PRTG creates a ToDo (and sends an email to the PRTG admin) to signal about discovered devices
- Within ca. 10 minutes PRTG found the first devices, added sensors for them, and also recorded the first monitoring data
