Synology Monitoring: PRTG checks the parameters of your Synology products
SNMP stands for Simple Network Monitoring Protocol. Its usefulness in network administration comes from the fact that it allows information to be collected about network-connected devices in a standardized way across a large variety of hardware and software types. SNMP is a protocol for management information transfer in networks, for use in LANs especially, depending on the chosen version.

Independent storage capacity
Synology offers highly-scalable network-attached storage (NAS) solutions which make independent storage capacity available to a computer network with little to no effort at all. PRTG monitors the system health of NAS systems to ensure data stays secure and the distribution of storage space takes place via the network. PRTG also lets you quickly identify hardware and software errors.
Central dashboard for all storage systems
Paessler offers network administrators a professional, all-in-one solution, thereby eliminating the need to rely on a variety of stand-alone applications. Thanks to the “manufacturer-agnostic” approach of PRTG to monitoring, you can link and compare Synology data with the data of other devices. The central PRTG dashboard provides an overview of all routers and storage systems, not just those from Synology.
Monitor Synology NAS with PRTG
PRTG comes with three standard sensors for your Synology NAS. These sensors provide all the most important NAS health data, and let you incorporate logical and physical NAS disks on an individual basis. A quick glance is all it takes to determine where eventual problems with your Synology storage may lie. Furthermore, thanks to the excellent SNMP support and documentation provided by Synology systems, you can use PRTG to query significantly more data than that which is delivered by standard sensors, data which you can subsequently incorporate into your monitoring. With PRTG, you’ll monitor every important aspect of your NAS!
PRTG provides a home for your favorite manufacturer.
How Synology monitoring with PRTG works
Thanks to its built-in Auto Discovery feature, PRTG automatically recognizes the Synology devices that are available in your network. PRTG also comes with device templates that are specially designed for Synology, allowing for corresponding sensors to be properly created and pre-configured without you having to do a thing. You can even choose to configure additional sensors manually and with a minimum amount of effort, and in the process, ensure all the important elements are included in your monitoring.
Sensor data is processed by PRTG and displayed on customizable dashboards. The multipurpose reporting feature of PRTG lets you send this data to coworkers and decision-makers, or else just create a log for your own records.
5 good reasons to choose PRTG as your Synology monitoring tool
Prevent downtime
Monitoring NAS devices and other Synology hardware helps to quickly detect problems and errors, as well as prevent costly downtime. Thanks to PRTG monitoring, you’ll work in a proactive manner.
Back up storage data, ensure compliance
Personal and business data need special protection. Monitoring allows you to promptly identify suspicious traffic and critical errors. Additional backup monitoring, which lets you keep an eye on the status of your backups, ensures data receives the protection it requires.
Automatic alerts
PRTG automatically sounds the alarm when your individual threshold values are exceeded. You’ll receive an alert by SMS, email, or push notification, wherever you happen to be.
Easy-to-read display
Synology data is presented on a modern, easy-to-read dashboard, and can be combined with data from other manufacturers and sectors. An intelligent reporting function facilitates the decision-making process when it comes to network maintenance and expansion.
All-in-one monitoring
PRTG is cross-manufacturer monitoring software that eliminates the need to juggle a number of different software solutions.

How PRTG defines sensors
In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, e.g. the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, the free space of a disk drive. On average you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
System health
PRTG offers a variety of ready-to-use sensors for your Synology NAS. The SNMP Synology System Health Sensor monitors the system health of your Synology NAS, for example.
Depending on the target device, it can query the following values:
- Temperature
- System status
- Power supply status
- Fan status
- Main memory capacity
- CPU load
SNMP monitoring
PRTG comes equipped with the SNMP Synology Physical Disk Sensor, which monitors the status and temperature of built-in disks, and the SNMP Synology Logical Disk Sensor, which allows you to check the status of individual volumes. PRTG also lets you create your own sensors using the MIB files provided by Synology. The SNMP Library Sensor of PRTG is ideal for monitoring a variety of individual measurements from a previously imported Synology MIB file with just one sensor. To import, you’re welcome to use our free MIB Importer. With PRTG, you can of course monitor the individual OIDs (and therefore measurements) of your Synology NAS. To do so, we recommend using the SNMP Custom Advanced Sensor. Just be sure to activate SNMP on your NAS and to incorporate the corresponding SNMP settings into PRTG, such as the SNMP version, SNMP port, and community string.
PRTG also comes with manufacturer-specific sensor types which, with only three clicks, can be deployed on your Synology NAS to query the desired data. Use the Folder Sensor, for example, to read the size of a folder, the number of files it contains, and the timestamps made to any changes in these files.
Router monitoring
Router monitoring queries the Synology router’s bandwidth consumption, network activities, and error messages. You can use SSH and SNMP to access data that is provided by the router. With PRTG, it is also a good idea to write your own scripts so you can access all the monitoring data you need. Our user-defined sensors ensure you’ll always be on the safe side!
