Detect database errors

Detect database errors with the PostgreSQL Sensor

For system administrators, troubleshooting large databases can be a Sisyphean task. One common error: PostgreSQL-based database systems are preconfigured in a way that fails to meet the specific requirements of the company. With the PRTG PostgreSQL Sensor, you can find and fix the settings that are responsible for slow database queries and other vulnerabilities.

PostgreSQL databases are mainly used by Apple and Linux

PRTG can be used to monitor PostgreSQL, an object-relational database management system (ORDBMS) that has been available as open source software since 1997. PostgreSQL is one of the leading open source databases systems in the world. It is mainly used with Linux systems and on Apple computers (as of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion).

The challenges of PostgreSQL databases

Many sysadmins run into problems when using a PostgreSQL-based database server for the first time.
If ignored or not fixed properly, these problems can lead to the following errors:

  • icon check white 2
slow database queries resulting in delayed search results
  • icon check white 2
incorrect database queries providing inaccurate results
  • icon check white 2
    an improperly-sized database
  • icon check white 2
    faulty or missing content
  • icon check white 2
database errors resulting in incorrect read and write values

Why should you monitor PostgreSQL databases with PRTG?

In order for your business to run properly, its databases must run smoothly and error-free. PRTG comes with a PostgreSQL Sensor that provides you with this security.

The PostgreSQL Sensor determines the number of database records involved in a specific query.

PRTG also monitors the performance of PostgreSQL databases so you can rest assured that everything is working as it should. You get long-term statistics and in-depth analyses of the most important database figures.

With the PostgreSQL Sensor, you can measure the time that is required for entire database queries, including the time it takes to connect to the database and execute the query, as well as the time of the transaction itself.

With the PostgreSQL Sensor, you’ll keep database downtime to a minimum. This is especially important for online stores and other web applications that must be available at all times.

What is a sensor?

In PRTG, “Sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, e.g. the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, the free space of a disk drive. On average you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.

4 easy steps to monitor PostgreSQL with PRTG

Step 1

Step 1: Check your version of .NET Framework

You’ll need .NET 4.7.2 (or later) to install and use the PostgreSQL Sensor.

Step 2

Step 2: Check the version of the PostgreSQL database

You’ll need PostgreSQL 7.x (or later) to use the PostgreSQL Sensor.

Step 3

Step 3: Save the SQL queries on the target system

The SQL database queries you wish to check must be stored on the target computer or on all the target computers of a cluster.

Step 4

Step 4: Save the SQL scripts in the right directory

The corresponding SQL scripts must be saved in %programfiles(x86)%\PRTG Network Monitor\Custom Sensors\sql\postgresql, which can be found in the PRTG program directory.

PRTG helps you detect and do away with database vulnerabilities

In addition to the PostgreSQL Sensor, PRTG comes with a variety of different sensors that are useful for detecting database problems. You can use our software to monitor all the most popular SQL databases, including:

  • Microsoft SQL
  • MySQL
  • Oracle SQL

Monitoring is done with their corresponding sensors: the Microsoft SQL v2 Sensor, the MySQL v2 Sensor, and the Oracle SQL v2 Sensor.

ADO interfaces are used to monitor other SQL databases.

PRTG comes with WMI sensors for Microsoft SQL Server 2008, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2017 in the event that you wish to monitor specific database performance parameters. These sensors can be used to monitor database metrics such as access types, data buffer and memory managers, memory locks, SQL statistics, and more.
