What does 'The virtual machine/host seems to be running but no performance statistics...' mean?

I'm getting the message 'The virtual machine seems to be running but no performance statistics can be retrieved. Check the Performance-tab on your virtual host or vCenter as well as https://www.paessler.com/knowledgebase/en/topic/44903 for further Information.' and 'The host seems to be running but no performance statistics can be retrieved. Check the Performance-tab ...' on some of my vmware-performance sensors. What does it mean and how can I fix it?

Under some circumstances it can happen, that the vpxa-agent on a VMWare-host may stop working. As a result you will get a 'No Data available'-message on the performance-tab for a dedicated host or virtual machine in the vSphere-client when connected to a vCenter-Server but well looking values when connecting to the Host directly.

In most cases it is enough to restart the vpxa-service on the host. For this you need to login to the host using vSphere-Client and follow the steps in the screenshot:

Restart vpxa-service on ESXi 5.1
