Network Management Protocol SNMP
How PRTG monitors your network devices using SNMP
The Network Management Protocol SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is a UDP-based network protocol that is used to monitor network devices for conditions that require the attention of an administrator.
How PRTG Can Assist You Monitor Your Network!
SNMP consists of three key components: managed devices, agents, and the network management station (NMS).
A managed device is a node that has an SNMP agent and resides on a managed network. These devices can be routers and access servers, switches, hubs, computer hosts, IP telephones, printers etc.
An agent is a software module residing within a device; it is executed at all times. This agent reports the information via SNMP to the managing systems. A network management station runs the network management protocol and the monitoring applications which provide the bulk of processing and memory resources required for network monitoring. An SNMP network can have more than one network management station.
Network Monitoring Using SNMP
The PRTG Network Reporting Tool monitors your network with SNMP. Even our network management freeware monitors up- and downtime of network devices, network traffic and usage, and can be used for database monitoring (SQL, Oracle and MySQL monitoring).
The Simple Network Management Protocol SNMP is the basic means of gathering bandwidth and network usage data. Monitoring the bandwidth usage of routers and switches port-by-port is the most common use of SNMP as well as monitoring device readings like memory, CPU load etc.
One of PRTG’s sensor types is the SNMP Trap receiver: it receives and analyzes SNMP Traps sent from the managed devices to log events. Depending on the content of the SNMP Trap, an alert can then be triggered. The PRTG network diagnostic tools are therefore essential for Windows XP and Vista network troubleshooting and help you to run your network in a more efficient fashion.
Other network monitoring methods supported by PRTG are packet sniffing and NetFlow. SNMP monitoring is recommended for most standard situations, as it is very powerful but causes only little CPU load. However, the Simple Network Management Protocol does not support differentiation of traffic by service/protocol.
