IP Scanner Tools vs. PRTG

Network scan with IP scanners

Many system administrators want to download an IP scanning tool for a quick check. Possible tools are, for example, Angry IP Scanner or Advanced IP Scanner. With this software, you can scan all devices on your LAN and WLAN. Comparison: Angry IP Scanner is an open-source solution and runs cross-platform on Windows, Linux and Mac OS. Advanced IP Scanner is a proprietary solution.

Network monitoring tool PRTG

With PRTG, you can permanently monitor your network. If there are disruptions or breakdowns, you will receive an alarm and can react quickly. With PRTG, you can monitor your network devices, but also applications and your network traffic – for example, which traffic runs over which IP address. Complete monitoring for your network.

This is what IP address monitoring looks like in PRTG

With PRTG, you know what's happening in your IP range

iAn IP address (internet protocol address) is a numerical representation that uniquely identifies a specific interface on the network. IP addresses are binary numbers but are typically expressed in decimal form (IPv4) or hexadecimal form (IPv6) to make reading and using them easier for humans.

IP Scanner

IP Scanner

The auto-discovery of PRTG is your IP scanner. Already during installation, our software scans the private IP address area in the subnetwork of PRTG. All devices that are available in the IP address area will be updated in the first monitoring. Later, you can start the automatic search in other subnetworks as well. This way, you can see at a glance which hardware is available in your LAN.

IP Sensor

IP Sensor

With the Ping sensor, you can check the reachability of all devices. With the ping test, you can see whether a device is reachable within your IP network. If a device behind an IP address is no longer reachable, you will receive a notification early on in case of disruptions. More about ping monitoring with PRTG.

IP Sniffer

IP Sniffer

With the Packet Sniffer sensor from PRTG, you can filter your traffic by IP addresses, servers, computers, laptops or printers, among others. This way, you can see which applications and IP addresses are responsible for the data traffic in your network. More about packet sniffing.

IP Traffic

IP Traffic

PRTG offers numerous pre-configured SNMP sensors, for example for various manufacturers such as Cisco, Dell or HP. The SNMP Traffic sensor monitors, among other, how traffic flows through your IT system. More about SNMP monitoring.

Three situations in which IP scan tools are used

You are new at a job

You are new at a job

You come as an administrator to a new company and immediately notice: chaos rules here. So you need a quick overview of your network. With an IP scanner or network scanner, you can quickly see which and how many devices are available in the network. Then you can start your planning.

Your company is moving

Your company is moving

Many companies grow. This is also the case with Paessler AG. When moving, our administrators used the Angry IP Scanner, among other, to check which devices are already reachable in the network and how they are connected with one another via routers and switches. This way, our admin team was able to set up the network piece by piece.

You want to increase security

You want to increase security

System administrators have to protect their LAN from attacks. One possible point of attack are open ports. Another weakness are private devices connected to LAN or WLAN without agreement. An IP scan helps here too. In addition, monitoring makes a lot of sense for long-term knowledge.

Network scanning at a glance: Running scans via the command line

One-time ping command

One-time ping command

Looking for a way to find out if one or more of your network devices are active? In Windows, the command line is both quick and easy. The command line is also referred to as the “CMD” or the “command prompt,” depending on your version of Windows. To open it, press the Windows key + R, then type “cmd”. The ping command “ping IP ADDRESS” lets you check whether your target device is available. You can run the ping command several times or use a loop to ping the entire network. You may have to configure your firewall to allow for pings. The command line is also helpful for getting to the root of problems in your home network.

PRTG: Keep a constant eye on your network

PRTG: Keep a constant eye on your network

PRTG monitors your entire network around the clock. When network errors occur, system administrators are often left in the dark. But with PRTG, you’ll be notified at once. What’s more, thanks to the PRTG dashboard, you’ll immediately see where the problem lies. This is the big difference between PRTG and other network scanning tools. Most tools only scan while PRTG also monitors.

Remote network scanning and monitoring

PRTG meets the demands of distributed networks

Many system administrators are in charge of distributed networks. These networks can be distributed across several buildings, as well as entire cities, regions, and countries. IT managers need a tool that offers centralized network scanning and remote network monitoring so they can be notified if a problem occurs at a specific location. PRTG is such a tool.

Setting up remote probes

PRTG comes with two types of probes. A “local probe” is automatically set up on the local server and network upon installing PRTG, while “remote probes” can be installed on remote networks. PRTG uses remote probes to access, scan, and integrate a remote network into its centralized monitoring. All information is encrypted via SSL before being transmitted. And the best part of all? It only takes one click to set up this remote monitoring.

gerald schoch

Practical tip: “Hey Gerald, what would you tell administrators looking to use PRTG as a NetFlow Analyzer?”

“Cisco has continuously developed the NetFlow technology. Administrators must therefore find out beforehand which NetFlow version is supported by their routers and switches. With the right PRTG sensors, setting up NetFlow monitoring is quick and easy.”

Gerald Schoch, technical editor at Paessler AG

Frequent questions about the IP scanner

What is an IP scan or network scan?

When you perform an IP scan, you can see the devices in your LAN and the network participants within an IP area. There are various tools for an IP scan that use different techniques.

What cheap IP scanners are there?

There are many IP scanners online, both freeware and paid software. But the price is just one criterion when making a comparison. The size and operating systems of your network are decisive. Another point is your needs as to how deep and detailed the network scan should be. Another criterion for many is whether the IP scanner is open-source or a commercial one.

Can I discover unknown, hidden devices with it?

Many system administrators run an IP scan to discover hidden devices, i.e. devices that are not officially part of the network. Shadow IT can be a risk factor, for example in network attacks.

Can I also scan my home network with it?

PRTG is designed for companies. It is too powerful and often too complex for a private network at home. However, if you have the necessary skills, you can use the free license with 100 sensors, as an example.

What’s a subnet? Can I monitor a subnet with PRTG?

Subnets are independent parts of an IP network. They use “subnet masks” to merge several successive IP addresses. A standard (RFC 950) is used to divide IP networks. Upon installing PRTG, the software automatically performs a network scan of a specific IP range. This scan can also be performed on a subnet in a different location.

Which network scanner is best for my operating system?

PRTG runs on Windows. You can also use our software as a cloud-based solution. PRTG is a cross-platform network monitoring tool that also monitors Linux systems and Apple devices (MacOS). As mentioned above, special software exists for each individual operating system. You’ll find port and IP scanners such as Nmap, which was originally developed for Linux.
