Sometimes an up-to-the-minute accurate system time is not enough. If you are looking for network errors, the log files on the computers which are involved can often be very useful. But, if the clocks of the computers are slowly drifting apart, it is difficult to reconstruct which computer triggered the problem that occurred and in which order different events occurred. To solve this problem you should use an NTP monitoring tool.
How does NTP works?
NTP allows servers to communicate a common time with one another. The packet delays on the internet will be measured and then largely compensated by NTP. The NTP process of a server acts as a clock and does not rely on the system time.
The NTP Sensor enables you to monitor NTP server. It returns the response time and the time difference in comparison to the local system time.
An NTP Server is a computer which is usually synchronized by a high-precision time-of-day clock, for example a GPS satellite.
PRTG Network Monitor can not only monitor NTP server, it can also be used for monitoring total disk space and available disk space Linux. And it allows monitoring availability and monitoring CPU load.
PRTG Network Monitor
Paessler's NTP server monitor PRTG is available in two editions. To monitor NTP and to monitor load, the freeware may be downloaded and used for personal and commercial use completely free of charge. Need more sensors to monitor a larger IT infrastructure? See our commercial licenses here.
