CPU monitoring – the key to smooth-running IT

CPU temperature in the server room

The server room is the IT hub of every company. In the event of a crash (or fire), the entire company is often brought to its knees. IT managers must therefore ensure the server room is protected from external threats and fires. CPU temperature monitoring helps them with this task.

And what better way to monitor CPU temperature than PRTG? Although PRTG is primarily used to monitor IT hardware, it also boosts security by allowing managers to keep an eye on firewalls, applications, and traffic.

CPU temperature in switches and routers

At many companies, the IT infrastructure gets bigger every year. The larger an infrastructure, the more likely it is to use a variety of different devices, including switches and routers from HP/HPE, Dell, Juniper, Cisco, and other manufacturers. PRTG is compatible with the devices of all these manufacturers and comes with preconfigured sensors so you can start monitoring them immediately.

However, a monitoring tool can only monitor the CPU temperature of a device if the device makes this information available. Another option is simply monitoring the CPU or device for any malfunctions or anomalies.

Sensors for monitoring your processors – including the temperature

Our software monitors the performance and availability of hardware and applications. This includes the basic system status of your devices, including the temperature. PRTG uses SNMP and WMI for this monitoring. Its sensors are customized for each individual CPU manufacturer, including Cisco, Dell, HP, and NetApp.

Case study: What customers have to say about PRTG

“PRTG makes our organization secure. If the temperature in the server room is too high or an update slows down our website, PRTG sounds the alarm so we can immediately get down to troubleshooting.”

CPU temperature: Three crucial questions

When it comes to processors, when is hot too hot?

Wherever electricity flows, heat is generated. There are different opinions on just how hot a CPU can get before something must be done about it. Conservative estimates suggest the temperature should never rise above 70 °C, even when the processor is strained. For higher loads, however, temperatures of up to 95 °C are common. The ability of a processor to withstand such temperatures depends on the quality of its components. Pay attention to the recommendations of the device manufacturer and customize the sensor accordingly. One thing is clear: regular overheating reduces the life of a processor and can cause heat damage.

Why do CPUs overheat?

Uncovering the cause of an overheated processor is a must. One possibility is that the CPU is overloaded due to an outdated switch. But a malfunctioning server fan can also cause a processor to overheat. Overheated CPUs can create all kinds of problems, including disruptions in email traffic or the website.

How do I fix an overheated CPU?

The easiest way is to switch to a more powerful CPU. But this may only be a short-term solution. PRTG lets you keep an eye on your entire IT infrastructure and analyze CPU load and the emergence of bottlenecks over long periods of time. As a result, you can optimize your IT resource planning and prevent CPUs from overheating in the future.

Practical tip: “Hey Stephan, what would you tell administrators looking to set up CPU monitoring with PRTG?”

“The SNMP CPU Load Sensor is a great way to get a handy overview of the load on all of a host’s CPU cores with just one sensor. Of course, this sensor also displays the total CPU load, which means you can always tell right away if one of your server’s processors is about to reach its load limit!”

To make your server room secure, you’ll need to monitor more than just CPU temperature

Humidity monitoring

Humidity can cause serious damage to hardware. One common type of damage is rust and corrosion. Unless you monitor humidity, you won’t notice this damage until the device malfunctions. And then it will be too late – not only are you forced to deal with the fallout from the crash, but you’ll have to replace the device entirely. PRTG comes with hygrometer-sensors that monitor the humidity in your server rooms.

Video surveillance camera monitoring

Many server rooms are equipped with video cameras. These cameras include digital and network video recorders. PRTG lets you monitor the status of these devices. And in the event of a memory or transmission error, it immediately sounds the alarm. More on CCTV monitoring.

Hardware monitoring tools and software

Free tools

Our hardware monitoring tool is mainly used by system administrators to monitor their IT infrastructure. But there is also a free version of PRTG. It comes with 100 sensors that never expire, which is usually plenty for small and private networks. You also get the dashboard, reports feature, and notification system, each of which is customizable.

Professional software

PRTG is used by medium-sized companies as well as global corporate groups. Universities and other organizations operating from several different locations also use our software. One reason is our flexible licensing model. Each license comes with a certain number of sensors. As a rule of thumb, you’ll need around ten sensors per device. In other words, the more devices you want to monitor, the more sensors you’ll need.
