Solving "Could not connect" or "Error 10060" Messages when using SNMP

If you want PRTG Traffic Grapher to read traffic data (or other values) from your routers/devices using SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol, see above) this protocol must be enabled on your devices. Also, the machine PRTG Traffic Grapher runs on must be allowed access to the SNMP data.

Please make sure you have gone through the following setup checklist:

• Enable SNMP on the device
• Allow access to SNMP for the machine running PRTG Traffic Grapher in the device's security settings (on many devices the IPs that are allowed to access the SNMP interface must be set manually)
• Double check that the "SNMP Community String" is set to the same value on the device and in PRTG Traffic Grapher (in most cases the default is "public"). This value is case sensitive!
• If the device and the monitoring machine are on two different sides of a firewall make sure that UDP access to port 161 (SNMP) is allowed and you will also need the return path open.
• Important for your firewall settings: SNMP uses UDP not TCP. SNMP requires the use of UDP ports >1023 to the PRTG Traffic Grapher client side so that the results can be sent to the machine running PRTG Traffic Grapher.
