Send SNMP Traps
Network monitoring and troubleshooting with SNMP Traps
SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is used to monitor different network devices. SNMP works on the basis that network management systems send out a request and the managed devices return a response. This is implemented using one of four operations: Get, GetNext, Set, and Trap. An SNMP Trap is sent from the device to the receiver to log events. The send SNMP traps functionality is therefore a very useful tool for network monitoring and troubleshooting.
PRTG Network Monitor is a comprehensive network monitoring software. It is the perfect tool for bandwidth and availability monitoring. Its vast functionality includes a SNMP trap monitor and SNMP trap server as well as a Windows syslog server, WAN latency and a server performance monitor.
How Does PRTG Make Use of SNMP Traps?
One of PRTG's many supported sensor types is the SNMP Trap Receiver: the network devices send SNMP Traps, those are received by PRTG and its content is analyzed. Depending on the content of the sent SNMP Trap, PRTG can then trigger a notification. This way, PRTG helps network administrators to keep on top of their network and to separate important from less important notifications. Even though the network devices constantly send SNMP traps to the server, you do not have to go through all of them manually, and you can rest assured that you will not miss any important notification. The SNMP Trap Receiver can only be used in probe devices.
PRTG Can Also Send SNMP Traps
PRTGs flexible alerting options also include the options to send SNMP Traps to a computer where a so-called Trap Receiver is listening. Trap receivers store these messages for later analysis and/or forward traps to the administrators using other means of alerting.
PRTG - An Advanced and Powerful Network Monitoring Tool
PRTG is available in two editions. For basic, free bandwidth tracking and network monitoring functionality (including IP SLA monitoring and jitter noise monitoring), the Freeware Edition may be downloaded and used for personal and commercial use completely free of charge. This free network monitoring software allows you to monitor up to 10 sensors. For more advanced needs, licenses for the Commercial Editions start at $400 / €300.
