PRTG Network Monitor is the powerful network monitoring solution by Paessler. The network traffic monitor freeware tracks network activity and bandwidth usage, monitors the availability of network devices, and gives you a complete overview of your network.
PRTG is not only a LAN monitor: using remote probes, the network monitor tools enable you to track network traffic and check bandwidth usage in multiple locations. The free network traffic monitor lets you monitor up to four different locations. For bigger networks, you can use a commercial license, where the number of sites that can be monitored ranges from ten to unlimited.
The network traffic monitor freeware uses SNMP, WMI and packet sniffing to keep track of network activity. The commercial edition also supports NetFlow. However, the built-in Windows packet sniffer will give you almost the same level of detail as NetFlow, and works with all kinds of routers and switches, not only the ones by Cisco. SNMP and WMI can be used for a simple network bandwidth test, showing you incoming and outgoing traffic.
PRTG - More Than a Network Traffic Monitor
The free SNMP client is also indispensable if you want to perform a network performance test and monitor your servers. Vital parameters for server performance monitoring are CPU and memory load, CPU temperature, available disk space, and the health of the hard disks. These and many more parameters can be monitored using SNMP and WMI. As soon as one of these values reaches a certain threshold (defined by the administrator), the server monitoring software triggers an alarm, which makes troubleshooting easy.
