Keep Track of Your Network Devices Using the PRTG LAN Network Monitor

PRTG includes a PING utility which enables you to monitor whether all your devices are corresponding and whether your LAN network connections are working. Thanks to SNMP and WMI support, PRTG also tracks parameters like free disk space, memory or CPU load, etc. This information helps you to react proactively to possible issues before they cause outages or other major problems. Depending on your devices, the LAN network monitor can also monitor the state of your network printers (toner, number of printed pages, etc.), temperature, humidity, and many other metrics.

PRTG makes sure that all your servers are running (including web servers, SQL servers, ftp servers, virtual servers, etc.), converting PRTG into a powerful SQL server monitor. The network server monitor will alert you if long response times are detected, or when a server does not respond.

Monitor Network Activity and Bandwidth Consumption

PRTG is also an excellent LAN traffic monitor, which tracks bandwidth consumption using SNMP, packet sniffing and NetFlow. SNMP is the most basic method for bandwidth monitoring, putting only very little load on your network. However, the information you get when using the SNMP monitor to monitor router traffic does not provide the same level of detail as packet sniffing or NetFlow monitoring. These technologies enable you to see bandwidth usage broken down by protocol or IP address, showing the results in so-called top lists. This way, the network traffic monitor shows you which application or computer uses most bandwidth.
