Monitoring VMware ESXi 5.5 does not work. What can I do?

When trying to monitor vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi) version 5.1 or higher, an error occurs and monitoring VMware does not work. The error-message says 'The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send.'

Is this a known issue? What can I do?

This article applies to PRTG Network Monitor 13.x.7 or later

Monitoring ESXi 5.1 and higher: Handshake Failure on Windows XP/Server 2003

Unfortunately, there are some issues regarding vSphere Client 5.1 and higher that runs on a Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 machine.
vSphere Server 5.1+ accepts only connections that use strong cipher suites, but on XP and Server 2003 the underlying system component does not use strong cipher suites.
Thus, the cipher suites do not match and the client may fail to connect to the server due to a Handshake failure.

This is also the reason for problems you may encounter if your PRTG Probe runs on Windows XP or Server 2003 and you want to monitor ESXi 5.1 and higher using the 'SOAP'-Sensors.

For details about this Handshake failure and possible workarounds, please refer to VMware’s knowledge base:
