This article applies to PRTG Network Monitor versions 7, 8, 9, and 12

How to Define a Different Drive or Data Directory for PRTG Installations

PRTG Network Monitor is a network monitoring software that stores its data in a centralized manner, allocating a data directory for the storage of configuration, log and dataset files. By default the program will store data on the C: drive. This article explains how to move an installation of PRTG Network Monitor from one drive to another, if necessary, for example if the server in case is running out of disk space on drive C:

Changing the Storage Drive or Directory

Please follow these steps:

  • Stop the core service:
    • When using PRTG 7: From the PRTG Server Administrator program choose the "Service Control" tab and click on "Stop"
    • When using PRTG 8/9/12: From the PRTG Server Administrator program choose the "Start/Stop" tab and click on "Stop Core Server"
  • Stop the probe service:
    • When using PRTG 7: From the PRTG Probe Administrator program choose the "Service Control" tab and click on "Stop"
    • When using PRTG 8/9/12: From the PRTG Probe Administrator program choose the "Start/Stop" tab and click on "Stop Probe Service"
  • Find the data folders:
    • from within the PRTG Server Administrator program select the "Core Server" tab and find the setting: "Path for data files" (PRTG 7) or "Local Storage of Data Files and Monitoring Database" (PRTG 8/9/12). You will need to copy the configuration and dataset files from this directory.
    • from within the PRTG Probe Administrator program select the tab: "Files / Directories" (PRTG 7) or "Logs / Directory" (PRTG 8/9/12). Find the setting "Path for probe data storage". You will need to copy the dataset files from this directory.
  • Copy all files to the desired new drive or data directory.
  • Enter the new path in the PRTG Server Administrator:
    • When using PRTG 7: Within the PRTG Server Administrator program choose the "Core Server" tab and change the "Path for data files" setting to the new path
    • When using PRTG 8/9/12: Within the PRTG Server Administrator program choose the "Core Server" tab and change the "Local Storage of Data Files and Monitoring Database" setting to the new path
  • Enter the new path in the PRTG Probe Administrator:
    • Within the PRTG Probe Administrator program choose the tab: "Files/Directories" (PRTG 7) or "Logs / Directory" (PRTG 8/9/12) and change the "Path for probe data storage" setting to the new
  • Restart the core service:
    • When using PRTG 7: From the PRTG Server Administrator program choose the "Service Control" tab and click on "Start"
    • When using PRTG 8/9/12: From the PRTG Server Administrator program choose the "Start/Stop" tab and click on "Start Core Server"
  • Restart the probe service:
    • When using PRTG 7: From the PRTG Probe Administrator program choose the "Service Control" tab and click on "Start"
    • When using PRTG 8/9/12: From the PRTG Probe Administrator program choose the "Start/Stop" tab and click on "Start Probe Service"

PRTG Network Monitor should now load and store data on the newly defined drive, respectively within the newly defined data directory.
