From time to time we run performance tests with the latest browsers (our own "PRTG Javascript Benchmark").

The Top 3: Chrome, Safari, Firefox

As of Q1/2010 the ranking is as follows:

What About Internet Explorer?

A rule of thumb is: Do not use IE!

  • Internet Explorer 8 is about 5 times slower than Chrome.
  • We do not even measure Internet Explorer 7 performance anymore, it is by far the slowest option (10-30x slower than Chrome 3 and more)
  • Internet Explorer 6 is not supported by PRTG

What About Firebug?

A note to users running the Firebug in Firefox: Disable Firebug for the PRTG website. Firebug can slow down the JS activity to 20-30% of the original speed.

What About Opera?

Opera does not support context menus for web pages. PRTG's web interface makes heavy use of context menus, so you can not fully work with PRTG in Opera.

Use Google Chrome!

Google Chrome 4 is the best choice for using the PRTG web interface! Its amazingly fast and easy to use.

More Details

The following browsers are officially supported for the PRTG web interface (in order of performance and reliability):

  • Google Chrome 3 and 4 (recommended)
  • Mozilla Firefox 3.5
  • Apple Safari 4
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 8

Note: Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 is "deprecated" and may not be supported in future versions of PRTG.

A note on browser performance: PRTG's web interface makes heavy use of Javascript and AJAX. We found that for some functions Chrome and Safari are up to 10 times faster than Internet Explorer 8 and 3 - 5 times faster than Firefox 3.5.
