How can Syslog events or SNMP traps trigger "Check Now" on a specific sensor?

I'd like to be able to listen for syslog or SNMP traps [ideally both] that, when received, would trigger a specific sensor to be checked.

Link state changes could then be picked up instantly without aggressive polling frequency.

Trigger a "Check Now" using a Notification

You can achieve this with a combination of a PRTG API call and a Execute HTTP Action notification.

Build API Call

Using PRTG's API, you can trigger a Check Now for any object. To do so, use this function:

/api/scannow.htm?id=objectid

For detailed documentation, login to the web interface (PRTG 8) and select Setup | PRTG API from the main menu. Then click on the HTTP API and the Object Manipulation tabs.

Please build an API call containing your installation's IP address/DNS name and login credentials, such as, for example: http://yourserver/api/scannow.htm?id=objectid&username=myuser&passhash=hash

Add Notification And Notification Trigger

Create a new notification (Setup | Account Settings | Notifications) with an Execute HTTP Action containing your API call.

Then add a new notification trigger in your sensor's Notifications tab which triggers this notification.

The entire procedure is very similar to the one described in the article Acknowledge a Sensor in Down Status Automatically
