Paessler WMI Tester

Tests The Accessibility of WMI Counters.

WMI stands for "Windows Management Instrumentation" and is the latest technology from Microsoft for monitoring and management of Windows based systems.

WMI allows a process to read out data for many Windows' configuration parameters as well as current system status values. Access can take place locally or remotely via a network connection. WMI is based on COM and DCOM and is integrated in Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista and later. Add-ons are available for Windows 9x and NT4.

Products like Paessler's IPCheck Server Monitor make use of the WMI functionality to monitor computers in network environments.

As accessing WMI counters over a network is not exactly trivial, the Paessler WMI Tester is a tool that can be used to test the accessibility of WMI counters in a quick and easy manner.

Basic Usage

After starting the Paessler WMI Tester you can provide the following configuration data:

  • Computer name / IP address: the DNS name or the IP address of the computer you want to test. Leave empty when testing your own machine.
  • Domain: the Windows domain containing the computer you want to test. Leave empty when testing your own machine or a machine without a specific domain (i.e. a standalone computer or a computer within a workgroup).
  • User: name of a user able to log in on the machine you want to test. You MUST leave this empty when testing your own machine!
  • Password: the password of the user (case sensitive). You MUST leave this empty when testing your own machine.

Now click the Test! button. After a while you will either see a result table showing the processes running on the machine or, in the event something went wrong, an error message.

Advanced Usage

Under this tab you can define the following:

  • Domain prefix: (usually you can leave this as NTLMDOMAIN: )
  • Query: choose between four predefined query sets (process, disk space, memory, processor load) or enter your own query (you need to know the required query syntax)
  • Note that by default the WMI namespace used is CIMV2. Currently, this can not be changed.
