While the Beta phase of PRTG 9 is still running, we will introduce some of the great new features here. Today we will show you a new way how PRTG can monitor a network segment's Quality of Service using the new "QoS Round Trip" sensor.
Quality of Service
Whenever real-time data is passed along a computer network (e.g. video, audio, VoIP), the "Quality of Service" is crucial for a good user experience. Our human eyes and ears are merciless detectors of network performance problems: When a video stutters or the voice from the other end of a phone call come across with lots of noise or missing syllables, we notice immediately.
With the ever increasing usage of UDP-based audio and video your network users will notice even slight network problems much earlier than in the past, when we were mostly using TCP-based services like web, email, and chat. TCP-based services have mechanisms built in that make sure that lost or out-of-order packets are resent or reordered automatically, in order to complete the transmission without any errors - it just took longer, but in the end all data arrived correctly.
The UDP-based world is different. There is no handshaking: the sending PC sends out a bunch of packets and has no idea how many of them actually arrive at the target PC, if they arrive in time and in the correct order.
What we are talking about is: Quality of Service. Back in 2009, with PRTG 7, we introduced our first UDP-based sensor that was able to measure the quality of a network connection, The QoS Sensor in PRTG 7.2.
QoS Round Trip
Now, with PRTG 9, we are introducing the new "QoS Round Trip" sensor. Similar to the orginal QoS sensor, it measures the performance and reliability of the network segment(s) between two PRTG probes by sending many UDP packets and measuring the results. But this time we are measuring the "Round Trip" results.
- PRTG sends hundreds or thousands of packets from probe A to probe B (with a few milliseconds between each packet).
- Probe B immediately sends back the packets to probe A.
- Finally probe A receives all (or less) of those packets
During this process we measure the following values:
- Packets Lost
- Packets Out of Order
- Packets Duplicated
- Packets Corrupted
- Jitter Min/Max/Average
- Packet Delay Variation Min/Max/Average
- Mean Opinion Score (MOS)
With this new QoS Round Trip sensor you can be sure that your network is in good shape and ready for VoIP, Skype, YouTube, video conferencing, and much more. It ensures deeper scrutiny of the network connection between two locations within one network segment, especially as regards packet loss.
