Monitor SAP Systems with PRTG
Our customers love PRTG not only because it's easy to use, but also because you can extend it in a very flexible way using your own executable or script files, which return monitoring data to PRTG in a simple text format or as XML. Once added, PRTG shows the results of your own sensors in "EXE/Script" sensors, and you can use all of PRTG's functionalities with it, among which are showing graphs and tables, triggering alarms, creating Maps, or including them in the monthly monitoring reports you send to your boss.
Extend PRTG's Monitoring Capabilities
Sometimes, you need some more functionality and do not have the time to program something yourself. In such cases, a good solution can be buying additional monitoring capabilities from a third-party vendor.
Monitor SAP Systems Using Third Party Software
If you always wanted to monitor your SAP systems with PRTG, you should take a look at the SAP sensors from Icon Software. This vendor has long-standing experience with SAP systems and created a comprehensive package of approximately 40 different sensors which can be integrated into PRTG using the "EXE/Script (Advanced)" sensor type.

Via a RFC call, these sensors can query a lot of different information and measurements from the local as well as from remote SAP R/3 systems. They work as little C-programs and are compatible with all common SAP releases (3.1I - 7.01).
In order for the sensors to connect you need to create a profile containing the target server, credentials, etc. The software package includes an "SAP Profiler", a small tool which helps create connection profiles. It can also test the connection and show which data will be shown later when you add the respective sensors to PRTG. This way you already know which performance data to expect before you even configure monitoring.
SAP profiles are stored in a small text file with credentials in encrypted format, which the sensors will use to connect to your SAP systems.
There are sensors available in four different categories:
- Basics: Shows data about CPU, disk, network, memory, and page usage, etc.
- Monitor: Shows data about queues, job states, log usage, etc.
- Workload: Shows data about the client usage and work load, response times, step usages, transactions, etc.
- Buffer/Database: Shows data about buffer usage, current database size and locks, etc.
Licensing of SAP Sensors
In the free starter pack, the two sensors "SAP SysCheck.exe" and "SAP SysInfo.exe" are included, which return general system and SAP information. You can also buy more sophisticated sensors for monitoring SAP servers' parameters as outlined above.
Licensing for the entire sensor package starts from €1,000 for a company license. All updates and future extensions are included in the one-time payment and will be made available for download.
