With the just-released version 7.3.3 of PRTG we are introducing significant improvements for PRTG's built-in web server. Especially for large installations with thousands of sensors, the user experience of both Windows and web interface will be noticeably faster. In our lab, we run installations of PRTG with 10,000 and 20,000 sensors. The 20,000 sensor installation, for example, runs on a water-cooled PC (Alienware) with a Core-2-Quad CPU at 2.66 GHz, i.e. quite a powerful machine. But with PRTG 7.3.2 most web pages took 5 - 10 seconds to generate. Some even took 30 - 50 seconds. We thought that's too slow. So we got our hands dirty, found a few things that needed to be changed and – wow! – with PRTG 7.3.3 all pages are being delivered in one second or less.
Only the sensor lists ("Sensors" and "Alarms" menu items) still need a little bit longer. If you are using 1,000 sensors or less, you will likely not feel a big difference. We saw the biggest improvements for systems that had a consistent high CPU load, e.g. our netbook installation (1,000 sensors on an Atom powered DELL Netbook) is about 2 - 3 times faster now. This massive performance increase is based on two factors. On the one hand, we've implemented various tweaks and optimizations in PRTG's internal code. On the other, this new version has a new "Speed mode" switch: When enabled, the following aspects of the software will change:
  • Slower updates for data displayed in the web interface: It can now take up to 60 seconds for a new sensor state (up/down) to be displayed in the web interface (alerts/notifications will still be sent instantly). This affects the web interface und Windows GUI)
  • The web interface does not alert on new ToDos in the browser window (ToDo emails will still be sent instantly)
  • The web interface does not display sensor mini graphs, either next to the sensor or at the top of the interface window.
  • The web interface does not show sensor-tree related menu items (devices by group, sensors by tag, sensors by type, sensors by group)
Download the latest version of PRTG now (see release notes)! If you are running an installation with many sensors, try out the new settings! In PRTG's web interface, choose "Setup | System Setup" from the main menu and enable the speed option in the "Performance Settings" section.
