Remotely fixing a PC via the Internet - Free & Instantly

Every once and a while you come across the task to remotely control a PC across firewalls, NATs etc. We are not talking about controlling a PC or server in your LAN or VPN (where you have full control over the firewalls, NATs etc.). In such a case I still prefer Windows Remote Desktop for its speed inside your own network.

I mean fixing a client’s PC, a co-worker’s notebook in an Internet Cafe, or even Mom’s PC without the need of travelling there.

Until recently my favorite tool was LogMeIn. They offer a great service and their free service is already powerful enough for the daily problems. But you need to get your hands on the “to-be-fixed” PC at least once to install the LogMeIn-client in order to later remotely control it. It runs as a service on the remote system so you can even take control without the need for a person to sit in front of the PC.

Now with Crossloop there is another option if you need to get access immediately. You and the person in front of the remote PC install and start a small piece of software, enter a common security key and - yeeha - you have access to the client’s desktop. CrossLoop is an innovative piece of software, built over TightVNC technology, that allows you control the computer desktop of a remotely located person using your own keyboard and mouse. The only condition is that both of you must be connected to the internet at the same time.

There is also one other concept that sounds interesting: Combining Remote Desktop with the Hamachi VPN service (which BTW is owned by LogMeIn now). But that’s too complicated to set up IMHO.

Name Best for Disadvantage What you need
Windows Remote Desktop Fast remote control inside your LAN/VPN Does not automatically handle firewalls, NATs etc.and the client PC must be configured accordingly If used across networks firewalls and reverse NAT settings must be configured so Port 3389 on the client can be accessed by the controlling PC.
LogMeIn Long Term Remote Control across the Internet You must have access to the PC at least once to install the client software Controlling and Client PC must have access to the Internet, data is relayed by the logmein servers

Crossloop Instant control over a PC (Hotline, Support) Can not be installed as a service for long term use Controlling and Client PC must have access to the Internet, data is relayed by the crossloop servers
